I was just curious what you all think is the most popular rail system.  I looked at ARMS but they are a little pricey.  The POF ones look ok but I'm not a fan of them.  Surefire makes a decent one and some of the poly ones look good too.

So my question is, which one is the most popular or the best bang for the buck?  Is the ARMS or POF so much better than the others or do they just cost more?

Let me know your thoughts.....

well if you want a free float id say go with a larue. although they are a little more expensive. if you want a non-free float id say go with a knights. although, once again, its more pricey than most.

I'd say best bang for your buck, free floating or not, would be midwest industries.

Midwest Industries.
Looks like a KAC, but it's a hell of a lot more affordable.

I have an MI non-free float on mine and it's very nice and solid.

For non-free float, go with MI.
For free float, go with Knight's or MI.
Free float rails are very important if you plan on mounting optics/aiming devices but you have to make sure it's a quality manufacturer.

I picked up a GG&G free float rail, mainly because it gives me the ability to customize how I want the individual rails set up. Not to pricey and it does what I need it to do.
Just my .02. Hope it helps.

the best rail for the money would either be a MI #17 or Surefire M73

I use a Surefire M73 and find it to be outstanding.  Was under $200, locks very solid, is made excellent and best of all, has heat shields, which almost all other rail manufacturers don't use.  All rails are the same height, so the top rail is not even with the flattop upper.  At first I thought this a disadvantage, however I have learned that it is NOT recommended to stradle optics from the flattop to the rail handguard due to dimensional differences.  Seems it can cause the optic mount to come loose, not be correctly aligned or possibly even damage the optic.

I mounted an EOTech 552 on my flattop, with a LaRue riser to get it a little higher and farther forward.  I also have an OTAL laser mounted on the M73 and it sits below the EOTech window allowing no blocking of the sight picture through the EOTech.  In this case the M73 is a real advantage over other handguards.

For the money?  You'd have to try really hard to beat the YHM price point on a FF rail.

thank you!!! finally someone who understands that the M73 with lower rails is actually a good thing.  Almost everyone here thinks it's a bad idea and I don't think they put any thought into what they are saying.

I also have the M73 and OTAL

you do not need the receiver rail and handguard rail to be even.  As you pointed out about putting optcs on both isn't a good idea and one thing I have been saying for a while is it's a great thing for using an OTAL or PEQ because it will sit lower and out of the view of any optic.  Also when using rail covers it doesn't make the handguards to big to put your hands around, if your not using a VG.

Thanks to everyone who shared your opinions.  I've been looking around and have not been able to find anyone that makes a rail system that is the size of the current M4 hand guards.  The reason why I'm looking for that is because I just saw a piston system that can be installed by the end user with minimum effort but it looks like it requires the M4 size hand guards because of the piston.

+1 on this.... hard to beat YHM price........ I just installed mine (pain in the ass....super super tight fit)  and it's awesome.  I put some Magpul on the sides and a tango on the bottom.  Looks great.

Just go with whatever you like, there are lots of good rail systems out on the market.
