Anybody have have opinions to stray clear away from mounting Eotech or RDS further forward?
AK style weapons have theirs closer to the front end because of the design but any advantages to that? It seems your peripherals would be wider if the sight was mounted further forward if using a FF rail. |
| My preference is to keep any optic more or less centered on top of the rifle rather than forward. Not only does it look better to me, it also balances the rifle better. Even though we're only talking ounces I would much rather those ounces not be hanging over the front. Just my nickel... |

When I re-read my statement, it's easily misinterpreted.
With the Eotech window further, your FOV is greater. I believe that if it's too close, you'll get sucked into the window and whatever is through it. Granted if the window is a little further, both eyes can easily observe around the window since its a smaller passageway. |
| Not really true. With the red dot further forward on the rail, you actually decrease the FOV that is visible through the glass. That means your eyes have to be more in line with the optic, as you are decreasing the total angle at which you can see through the optic. Think of it like looking through a toilet paper tube right up to your eye vs. holding it with your arm extended. In essence, you would decrease the advantage of red dots being parralax free, since moving too far to either side would cause you to lose sight of the red dot on the glass. |

It's because too many people shoot unmagnified optics with their weak eye closed. |
| With red dots, the further out the mount the sight (from the rear of the rifle) the more of the glass the reticule takes up. This really isn't an issue with Aimpoints because the dot only reticle takes up so little of the glass. With EO Techs however, it's significantly worse. With an EO Tech, I like it just far enough forward that I can easily operate the controls (assuming their on the rear of the optic). |
