So I picked up a nice little AR from Colt(6920MP-B). And I decided I'd try and mount an optic. So I bought some ridiculously cheap all-but-throwaway tubes from Walmart and Amazon, just to have tubes of various sizes to try out what I wanted to end up with - with something quality
So far: The big varmint scope won't even fit far enough forward of the charging handle to stay behind the front tower and keep the charging handle convenient. Even after a cantilever mount. But at least it seems to look over the top of the front tower. A little bitty 1-4x24 long eye relief doesn't would probably fit, if I wanted to take the freakin cantilever mount apart again..but it stares at the front tower. And that's about all it sees. I still have options... a riser for the varmint scope is an idea I'm floating. I've got a Carry Handle for a more traditional rear sight rather than the Magpul BUIS I have now, and I suppose I could try and mount a tube on the carry handle. Last option is I could get an Acog which seems overkill for some range fun- or work out one of those Holographic + Magnifier setups. But will those run into the same issues with the skyscraper on the end of my barrel? As much as I complain about the thing, that's just frustration of hitting a new problem with every alternative I've tried, and I don't really want to drop a permanent modification to the weapon. |

If you took a few minutes to look at a few of the many picture threads here you would see that you are fussing about the front sight for nothing. All of mine have a FSB and an optic of some kind. I did look at those. Everything I see is either longer or low profile. I realize I've got somewhat limiting constraints here. I was hoping someone who'd gone through the same things would have some information. Carbine length, not changing or chopping the sight post...
How well mounting to a carry handle works, any "wish I would have known that before I started" surprises... If you NEED or just WANT, or NEITHER on a riser for the holographic + magnifier combo... |
