I have a vice i would like to start using for my armorer's block and such for projects.  but i have one problem.  I rent an apt so I have no work bench.  Is there an effective way to secure a vice and make it sturdy so I can use it for a project and be relatively compact and able to be used for my firearms work?

C clamp it.  Or go to the hardware store and explain the situation and they might have a special mount for you.

get a bathroom type vanity with two doors in the front. The top where the sink would go you would normally mount a counter top cut out for the sink. Use a solid core door or something similar.  Mount the vise on that after you screw and secure the top on the vanity. works great for me. I have reloading press also mounted on the set up I just described.

Bolt the vise to a board.  When you need to use it, either put the board on the floor and stand on it or use c-clamps to put it on a table or counter.

Black and Decker Workmates should do the trick.

Second on the Workmate.  You can brace it with your foot (or have a friend help out) if you're really cranking on it.  Just bolt the vise to a piece of 2x4 or 2x6 to make it easy to clamp in the Workmate.

+1 for the vanity w/ solid top if you have the space for it, you can keep all of your nasty gun stuff in the cabinet. Find a used building materials place and call around to see if they have any vanities, usually they can be had for $20 or less.

This probably won't help since you already have a vise; however, I'm picking up one of these today for my own use.

+1

A 4'-5' 2X12 works great for this.  And you can stand it on end in the closet when not in use.

Find an old car wheel, weld a pipe straight up, ending in a platform big enough for the vice.
Here is a link to one made from an 18 wheeler brake hub.
Even for those who have permanent shops, this would be a big addition to any who likes to tinker with metal or wood work.

I've used this method before for the same reasons as the op.

Works like a charm even when you are trying to bust loose a barrel nut.

The fold up workbenches are a waste of your money in my experience they just won't hold up to the abuse of some of the torque involved.

They can't be used in place of a vise, but they make a decent stand for the vise-on-a-board and they can be put out of the way when not in use.

I got a Craftsman Grinder stand for my vice, it works great, It was even sturdy enough to support the vice while using it to pop a stubborn barrel pin out of an AK project.

They run about $60 bucks at sears.

On a simliar note, for those of us who don't own a vice, any recommendations?

The biggest, heaviest, sturdiest MOFO you can afford and have the space for.

The best vise by far IMHO is made by Columbian.

I was lucky enough to rescue a barely used one from a scrap metal bin.

this is going to sound really bad but worked great for me.

i used a large pipe wrench to hold my action block while working on the floor.

please know i was working with a vltor upper so if i was not comfortable doing it or worried that i would scratch it i would not have done it

Find in your home a solid surface.  I use my kitchen aisle.

Attach the vice to a piece of wood.

Use C-clamps to attach the vice/wood fixture to the solid surface.

Solid enough for rebareling or just put toguether an upper assembly.

Tips:
Put an old towel between the vice and surface.
Wait for the wife/girlfriend/mother is not at home to try this

ETA:  The only way to securely clamp the upper receiver for rebarreling is to sandwich the receiver between the block and a scrap piece of wood as pictured below. (pic from ADCO.com)

Look around at garage sales and craigslist.

I picked up this solid topped desk at a garage sale for $20. Bought a harbor freight vice for $30. I'm on my 3rd HF vice. Keep breaking them by using them to push in ak barrel pins. Also found a US made vice (much better quality) at a garage sale for $5.
