so the bulb in my 10 year old gunmetal grey Surefire 6P went out the other night and I am looking at using an LED drop in of some sort. I do not want to spend a ton on it, because I would honestly be fine with another stock SF bulb, so I would prefer to keep the price under $25. looking around I see things like the Solarforce drop ins and many are multi mode. would a multi mode drop in work on a bone stock 6P, or would I need some sort of clicky tailcap?

If this is going on as a weaponlight get a single mode drop in and get a Malkoff or Elzetta. It's more expensive, But it's the only drop in I would trust putting it on an AR.

no, not going on a weapon. this is just my around the house/checking out the far yard area light. if I get some more light and longer battery life by going to an LED drop in, then I will be happy.  if this was going on a weapon, I would def go for the malkoff or elzetta items. there are so many more choices these days for a weapon light, I just can't see sticking with a 6P and then the cost of those drop ins. for the price of a 6P and malkoff, the price is close enough to something like a Fury P2X that I would just go with that.

I know that you said around $25, But I still love Malkoff and these are the ones that I know of for multimode drop ins. If you wan't my recommendations I would just go with a G2X Pro. Either would work fine but for a drop in I prefer Malkoff. In relation to all drop ins, If it say's it's drop in and it doesn't say that anything else is required you should be GTG. I prefer the twisty tailcap anyways.

There are a few here that are closer to your budget, and they are high quality drop ins. I have 8 of them, all going strong.

thanks for all the input.

I got tired of looking at all this stuff, and just grabbed a basic one from Lighthound. Cree R5, up to 340lm, 3.7v to 18v input voltage. if it seems like a good amount of light and decent pattern in the 6P, I will try it in the old G2 that I have. as long as the G2 can handle the heat, that is where it will stay. then I can see putting the money into a malkoff for the 6P.

my drop in arrived today. excellent order service and shipping time by Lighthound. I placed the order very late on tues and it was processed and shipped on weds. made it from door to door TX to CA in less than 3 days.

the drop in did fit, but would not sit far enough down to completely screw on the head of the 6P. it was functional, but not 100% perfect.  this was expected, most say they have to trim the ground ring to make it work. I also tried it in the G2, but the ground ring stopped on the plastic body and could not make contact with the conductive liner. a couple of test snips to the ground ring and it worked fantastic in both lights. fresh batteries in both, and there is a world of difference between this and the fairly old and used stock 6P bulb. in the back of my mind, I seem to recall seeing a replacement 6P bulb in my gear somewhere. if I can dig it up I will compare that to this Lighthound drop in. I still do not think it will beat this drop in though, esp for the price.

Some of the drop in require you to remove the outer ring in order of the body to fit. It will still work as the body of the light normally is taller than the standard P60 bulbs

I did actually try that before trimming the spring. but that made the base just small enough that I did not get any contact. at this price though, I am willing to experiment some.
