Does a muzzle brake make an AR15 and/or a M4 louder?  I have the Colt 6400c which is a post ban M4 with a muzzle brake.  When I shoot the gun it seems louder than other black rifles (I shoot in PA which is a pre-ban state).  I do shoot M855 ammo so maybe that contributes to the gun being louder.  Thanks.

Huh, what did you say? I can't hear anything but the ringing in my ears.

A brake works by using vents to redirect the blast to the sides, rear, and in some upwards. This makes the gun seem louder since the gasses are normally going directly away from the shooter and the line.

Since you live in NJ, the best thing to get is the FSC556 from Primary Weapon Systems.  It is a combination brake and hider, but it is NJ legal.

First time I heard an AR-15 shot with a muzzle brake, I thought it was a larger caliber than .223.  I almost sh!t my pants because he was only a few feet from me.  I think they should be banned from public ranges because they are too fvcking LOUD.

I don't think anything should be banned from the public range as long as it is safe.  My 10.5" is pretty loud also, and while I generally don't go to public ranges, sometimes they are a great spot to shoot when I am limited on time.

they do rattled the ears (and sometimes teeth)

since they re-direct the blast more towards/around the shooter, they are louder

Even at public ranges there are rules which the clubs or range organizations maintain.  I was surprised to find a range in Oahu that bans human silhouette targets.  I've read about other ranges in this forum that allows you to have a limited amount of ammo in your mags when shooting and you cannot rapid fire at some ranges.  Even with ear protection, a muzzle brake is still quite loud and can be very uncomfortable for others in close vicinity.  Sure the noise and concussion from a muzzle brake is not a safety issue but it sure is unwarranted.

You do understand that there are states like NJ, NY, MA that don't allow muzzle brakes.  Do you think that most of us that live in a ban state really want to use muzzle brakes?

You mean flash hiders

They are often louder to bystanders than the shooter. I never knew how obnoxious my AR10s brake was til I let someone else shoot it at a tin roofed shooting range. It sounded like crew served artillery piece Brakes seem WAY more obnoxious under those tin roofed structures.

When I shoot I don't really hear or pay attention to the noise. With proper hearing protection a few more deciables won't matter one way or the other.
I buddy has an Armalite 20" that has a Bushmaster Y-Comp the reduces felt recoil to the point to where all you feel is the buffer moving.
On my RRA 20" I have tried 2 different comps,
the DNTC...

and the Miculik...

Of these 2 the Miculik is a little better in reducing felt recoil but the cheaper Y-Comp is much better than both of these.

It's funny how some people are sticklers for certain usage, but mess up when they try to make their point.  Heehee, just havin' fun with ya'!
