Couple questions to help me along as I am new.
I hear them called Muzzle breaks, Flash hiders and compensator. Is there a difference between the three? Also I seen people talking about indexing or properly installing them? How do you index or ensure it is properly installed? And what can happen if it isnt? THanks! |

Muzzle brakes, compensator and flash hiders/suppressors are not the same, but there isn't as much difference in them as people think (generally).
A brake or compensator is designed to handle, direct or redirect the expelling gases from the muzzle in such a way as to negate the recoil impulse in as much as it can to keep the muzzle still, assisting with on-target follow up shots. A flash hider/flash suppressor is designed to dispel the expanding gases to minimize 'flash' or the still burning gases/powder, from giving away your position or obscuring your view for follow up shots. Some devices do more than one thing, usually not great, but adequate for most of us. If you're interested in primarily having fast follow up shots on target, get a brake or compensator that has been specifically designed for your weapon/application. For the rest of us, get a flash hider. I should note that brakes/comps are generally (not always) louder in some applications by virtue of how they are designed and how they function. Timing - Is determined by the device you are installing, some require specific timing, others do not. As an example, the A2 flash hider should be installed 'timed'.
This means that it is screwed on and properly torqued in a manner that when it is installed, the 3rd cut is top, dead center. This is usually achieved by timed threading, crush or peel washers or spacers. The manufacturer will generally provide instructions and washers for the device. |

If my build will be used primarily for range and self defense on my property, which one would u recommend? I'm no expert but it would seem like a flash hider would work. However the reason I'm going to buy a comp is the follow up shots. So I guess it would depend on how your going to shoot it at the range. |

Not planning on adding a suppressor (silencer) or doing competition type shooting? Go with
a flash suppressor/hider. Lot of good ones out there, I like the standard A2 birdcage or the A2X (extended), but it really is personal preference. If you go SBR, may want to look at something that tames (suppressor) or redirects the blast away from you like the Noveske Pig. For home defense or range plinking, reduction of flash/shit in the face would be a priority rather than taming an already mild recoil with a brake or comp. |
