I am looking at a getting a 14.5" mid length upper.  The flash suppressor/muzzle device is not permanently pinned unlike any other uppers I have purchased.  This means that when assembled with a lower, that is not a legal rifle per NFA.  I read some notes about attaching it permanently, but will need to have someone else do it.

What is a fair charge for permanently attaching an a2 hider?  Or should I just wait and pick up a 14.5/middy with it already permanently pinned?

ADCO does a FANTASTIC job, I highly recommend them if you don't have someone local to you.

They only charge $30

You will need a FH that is at least 2.25" long.  A regular A2 will not bring it to 16".  Bravo makes an extended A2 that comes drilled and with a pin.  I would find a drill bit that fits the predrilled hole and take that with me to a local shop.  Find a shop near you that will do the work and expect to pay $20-30 for a FH that is already drilled and has a pin.

If you are wanting a flash hider to spruce up the looks of the rifle, then any flash hider will do as long as the flash hider's overall length makes your barrel the 16" minimum barrel length with a closed bolt to not be considered a short barrel rifle.

If you have not done so; use a dowel that is 3/16th to 7/32nd of an inch in diameter, and slide it down the muzzle of your barrel until it meets the bolt that is in battery. Make a mark where the dowel meets the edge of the barrel's muzzle, and remove the dowel afterwards to see what your barrel measures. I have a M4 barrel that actually measured 14-5/8" from the bolt when I used the method the BATFE uses to measure barrel length which is the one I have described. I'm using a B.E. Meyers 5.56mm 249F flash hider which put my barrel length at 16-13/16" with the flash hider installed. Which also is blind pinned and welded to the barrel.

I used an Outers Brass Cleaning Rod to  measure my barrel length which was just a hair smaller than a .223/5.56 barrel diameter.

Thank you for the replies.  I will check out adco, and that measuring technique definitely seems way better than measuring with a tape.

Before you buy a barrel with a pinned flash hider make sure you know what handguards/gas block your using...... If you go with some thinner handguards its going to be near impossible to find a gas block that will fit under the handguard or go over the flashhider. Most your options are for the two piece gas blocks.
