Hello-
I'm new to the forum and have enjoyed reading everyone's posts.  I am in the market to purchase my first AR and wanted some advice on which to look into.  It's purely for recreational use.  I've been a handgun guy for years and have now moved into military rifles.  I have to admit that I don't know much about them but am trying to learn. What would you suggest as my first purchase?

Read the tacked threads in the AR forum and also the threads there for a while before you decide anything. I would say that if you are somewhat mechanically inclined to build your own. Usually save some money and learn how the weapon works that way. Best part is that you can build it the way you want and not have to re-fit it with what you wanted after the fact.

Inexpensive A1 carbine here. Check Gunbroker.com and you might find a quality Bushmaster for under $700 bucks, I did.

If I were you building is a no lose situation. But if you want a complete rifle go with Colt, RRA  or Bushy. I like all of them. Their are other brands but I don't have shooting time with them so I can't recommend them good or bad. But these three are great.

Welcome aboard. As far as which AR to get, you really cant go wrong with any of the major manufactures such as Bushmaster, RRA, Colt and the many others. Shop around before buying as prices vary greatly. Good luck on your quest.

Welcome to the site.   As mentioned above, Bushmaster, RRA or Colt.  Either would be a good choice.

Welcome, warning these rifles are addictive, if you just want a range AR, go for a RRA, Olympic,DPMS or model1.

If you want a real AR, go for colt, bushmaster, armalite, CMMG etc.

Thanks for everyone's input.  I have a better idea of which direction to go.  Building one intrigues me, though I'm not sure if I have the mechanical aptitude (let alone the patience) to do so.  If anyone that has had experience building wants to point me to "where to begin", it would be appreciated.
