Hi, I'm new to this forum and rifles in general so I'm looking for all the advice and information I can get.

I just recently bought my first AR . It's a foliage green Bushmaster MOE XM15 with 2 stage match trigger. It was between the Bushmaster and M&P15 but the Bushy has the better trigger for $50 more.

http://www.bushmaster.com/Artwork/carbines/xm15-green.jpg

I guess my question is what to do next...optic? Probably should buy some good quality ammo, 5.56 or .223? What's a good sling? The Magpul AFG? Other accessories, etc?

If you've got any suggestions on what to look for and where to get it, I'd be much obliged.

Thanks!

Hey ,
Welcome to the site . That's a nice ride you got there , I'm also partial to Bushys .
As far as you question about optics .....I'm not an expert but , one of my buddies has an Eotech and I believe I will be purchasing one shortly . I'm sure someone will chime in and explain the optics to you .
I would also get a good tactical case / bag something that will protect your rifle to and fro the range .
Ammo ,Ammo,Ammo . then have a blast ....litteraly . Bushy's will eat any ammo you can find , so feed it often . lol

you need to see what your gun likes.  Don't go buy 1000 rounds of something.  Buy 4-5 different kinds in 20 round boxes.  You have a 1/9 twist, so don't bother with the heavier stuff right away.  Buy some 55 grain and 62 grain to see how it likes it.

Great suggestions. What about Federal XM193 ammo? I read good things about it. Also, I'm thinking of the Aimpoint M4 with Larue mount. Or should I start with my iron sights first.

Congrats on your first AR!. If you're like most of us it won't be your last!.  For an optic I'd go with an Aimpoint or Eotech. The Comp M3 or ML3 costs substantially less than the M4 and has the same 2 MOA dot. My advice would be to check the Equipment exchange and find a good used Aimpoint or Eotech, you can save substantially. Half of my optics were bought used. Vickers Combat Applications sling can't be beat!

I'll definitely look into that sling. Great advice about the equipment exchange! I haven't even fired a round yet and I'm excited to see what I can do with the rifle.

Learn your irons first. Thats like learning to ride a bike before you buy a Harley. Once you learn them a red dot is almost boring easy.

Nice Stick and Welcome to the forum

Like the others said, mags and ammo, master those irons, then move on to the other fun stuff like optics.

Get a light first try viking tactical. Then eventually get an aimpoint (or eotech. Ilike aimpoints)

I like the foliage furniture, looks sharp.

on the XM193, MY bushy 24" vmatch hates it. but it also doesnt really want to shoot anything else but handloads that i finely tune. ive heard of good groups (1/2 moa 5 shot 100 yd) but have yet to see it. put a good 3-9 or 4-12 scope on it or an eotech w/ 3x magnifier and life is great. only thing is the dot on the eotech is HUGE and its a pain to shoot tight little groups with, and im not a big fan of groups over 1/2moa at 100 yd. buy some mags, i use lancer polymers mostly and some USGI mags. i like the little 20 rounders because it makes bench shooting easier. dont even own a 30 round mag. slings - who needs them? maybe on a deer rifle, but not on an ar IMHO. just my .02

Thanks for the tips everyone! I guess I better get some ammo first and learn those irons. I guess that gives me time to save up a bit for some fun stuff later.

I actually just won that very same rifle/color in the Bushmaster/Magpul/ARFCOM Radio drawing. I hope to get it later this week

Welcome to the site Magix! You picked a great rifle-your new XM15 will last you a lifetime

I own two Bushy Patrolman's carbines, and they do particularly well with XM193 and XM855. Also, despite the fact that they have 1/9 barrels they handle the heavier stuff (like 75gr Hornady TAP) just fine. As stated above, buy several different types of ammo in small quantities to see what your rifle likes best. Once you've got that figured out, start buying it by the pallet.

Completely agree with the others about mastering your irons first, but once you're ready your new rig has "Aimpoint" written all over it!

You'll never regret buying quality, and your new Bushy is a great platform to learn and grow with. Mine are completely and totally reliable-I haven't had a lick of trouble from either and I'm proud to have them in my collection. You'll see!

Read this for an excellent primer on how to properly lubricate and maintain your new weapon Keep It Running and don't be shy about asking questions.

Helping you is why we're here-welcome aboard

Priorities

1. sling, rifle needs a sling like a pistol needs a holster.  Use a 1 or 2 point sling.  Any of the above posted are great.  Stay away from 3 points.
2. Mags and ammo.  I would go with PMAGs as you are sporting a Magpul MOE rifle. Agree with poster above, try out a bunch of different flavors before you buy by the case.  a 1:9 twist will stabilize up to 69gr.  But, that is not set in stone.  Some guys are having good luck with theirs stabilizing 77gr.  My 1:9 loves 55gr and Black Hills 69gr match when shooting groups and small targets.
3.  Optics.  learn your irons first.  Keep your irons on even when you have an optic and practice with them occationally to stay profecient.  Going with Aimpoint, Eotech or Acog you will never go wrong.  Decide what kind of shooting you are going to do the find a site that matches that function.
4. POST PICS

hahaha I'll try to post pictures soon, but there's actually no point doing that right now. The picture I posted above is EXACTLY what I have, not a single difference. Of course you all would get to see my lovely hard case that came with it. lol

I'm stop by the local gun store and see what kind of ammo options I have to try out. Btw, can I use both .223 and 5.56? My barrel is stamped 5.56 NATO so I'm assuming I can (which is what the manual also says).

When I was in the store pulling the trigger on the XM15 and MP15, the two stage trigger just felt so good. Kind of like pulling the trigger on a pistol in single action vs double action. Also, after talking with the staff, they said I could install a two stage trigger on the MP15 for ~$150. However, the Bushy already came with it for $50 more because they were running a sale on them since they received 10 of them. Since I don't have any experience with AR's, I just went with my gut and it told me to get the trigger that felt better.

Not at all, I got it for $1,050 out the door. Is that a good deal on this AR? I only shopped around a little bit and my budget was around $1000.

Thats not a bad price at all i built mine as you see it for about $900.I have pretty much the same set up. I love the gun. Id say get used to the irons first then go for whatever type of optic fits what you will be using it for. Here is my bushy/delton with the same furniture plus a few extras.

To answer your ammo question, your Bushmaster will eat both 223 or 5.56 without any issues whatsoever.

With an AR, when in doubt believe what's on the barrel, rather than the lower receiver.

Very cool add-ons! I can't wait to start outfitting this rifle. There's so many options that it's mind-boggling.

Aimpoint Micro for optics.

Single/2 point sling. Something like this:

I don't like the magpul MOE handguard and stock. If you have a chance in the future you might want to replace it with a Troy or DD non-free float handguard. Go with the CTR, vltor, etc. for stock.

5/19/2010 3:29:56 AM EDT
[#35]
So what do you think is wrong w/ the moe stock/ handgaurd? I have shot with both the ctr and my moe. There is absolutly no difference in feel or play in the stock. I have also shot it with a 6.8 upper. It also feels just as good as the ctr( I also have a beard and it does not catch any hairs when firing). As for the handgaurd I have a tango down grip and surefire g2 light mounted and have put about 1000 round's through it and it still  has no play and feels like the first time I installed it. Just wondering why you dont like them?

Sounds right for a new bushmaster with that package. Retail is $1300 I think(slightly under). I see Cabelas has the standard Bushmaster M4 type for $900 on sale so your right in line

Yeah, I'm leaning towards the Aimpoint for looks and purpose after doing some research. Hopefully I can find a good deal on one since they're pretty $$$$.

If I do get the Aimpoint M4, do you think the mount it comes with is good enough? Or should I invest in a Larue mount? It seems like all I read about are the Larue mounts! Does it really make that much of a difference?

The best Aimpoint is the T1 micro.

Can you explain why? I'm also interested in that optic.
5/19/2010 10:36:51 AM EDT

It can do what the M4 can without the extra weight and bulkiness. You can also use it as a secondary optic mounted 30 degree on the handguard if you decided later on that you want to switch to a scope.

Just something to think about, I've had probably 2 Aimpoints and 2 EOTech's.  Try as I might, they just don't do it for me (not even for CQB with flashlights).  All of my ar's are currently iron sights.

Yeah, I've considered not putting an optic on it. I probably won't for a while anyway since I'll need to save up a bit.

I found an Aimponit T-1 for $525 NIB. Is that a good deal? If so I'll probably get it next month if it's still available.
