I plan on doing my very first AR build with in the next few weeks.  Couple of weeks ago I picked a Spikes stripped lower for $100.  Today when I got home the Spike upper I ordered from AIM was at my door step.  What tools will I need to complete this build?  I plan on getting a Spikes LPK, Magpul CTR stock, MOE plus grip & some P Mags.  What else will I need?  A pic of what I have so far.

Thanks!

Really just some punches and a castle nut wrench should be all you need.

Tools? naw, real men use bare hands!   I got by with just a pair of pliers and a castle nut wrench on my first lower build. Brownells has a starter kit for about 100 bucks that might interest you. The moe grip should just need a regular screwdriver to install it. check the tacked threads in the do it yourself section for more tips and hints. Nice lookin upper, now get another.

Is there a buffer tube kit that comes with out the buffer?  If so which one do you guys recommend?

I recommend the Spikes Buffer Tube Kit, although, it is out of stock everywhere. You will have a spare buffer. It's always worth having a spare. You can also buy a BCM Buffer Tube Kit. It also comes with the buffer.

I would suggest you obtain:

1 - Non-marring mallet, (I use a small Snap-On Dead Blow)
1 - 3/32" Roll Pin Punch
1 - 7/32" Roll Pin Punch
1 - 3/16" Roll Pin Punch
1 - 1/4"   Roll Pin Punch
1 - Castle Nut Wrench

I also only use Snap-On Roll Pin Punches as well, but that's just me.

Out of the roll pin punches, I generally only use the 3/32 and 1/4 I believe the most often.

One thing I do, is I wrap lower receivers in electrical tape before I install any roll pins, pretty solid way to prevent marring.  I basically wrap all flat surfaces in other words.

Does anyone sell a set of punches or can I just go to the local hardware store & pick some up?

Bro, you don't need none of them sissy punches. All you need is a hammer and duct tape (so you don't scratch up the finish). I've built two lowers with nothing but a set of pliers, a screwdriver, a nail, hammer, and a castle nut wrench. The only specialty tool you'll need is the castle nut wrench; those can be had online for under 10$

Also, I would suggest just getting this lower build kit from Palmetto State Armory to finish it up. Yes, you'll end up with an extra buffer but at this point you'll get a buffer with whatever setup you buy. It's almost always part of the package.

And great choice on a first rifle. Spikes makes the best rifle out there for the money. I have 2 Spikes rifles right now and they've both been flawless, accurate, and have good fit and finish (not that the last part really matters). You will not be disappointed with yours.
