I'm currently building my first AR with my dad, and to be honest, I don't know that much about parts/functions and such. So I'm making a list of all the parts I need. I've already built the lower receiver, and I'm currently on the upper, picking out all of my parts before I order any. So, my question is; is the bolt carrier key and the gas key the same thing? I looked at the Brownells parts list, and all I see is bolt carrier key.

And besides this, do you have any other tips/tricks, or reccomendations?
Thank you so much

Yes, gas key and carrier key is the same thing.

The lower, as you know, doesn't require much as far as tools but the upper is another story. Unless multiple builds are in your guys future, the money invested in tools could be put towards a complete upper. An upper assembled by a reputable source will assure proper function and come with a warrenty just in case.

Just so you know, the gas key comes on an assembled bolt carrier group. It's much cheaper and easier to buy an assembled one than to piece one together (especially for a first timer), unless there's some exotic parts you're wanting or something. Just putting it out there in case you didn't know, no offense.

I was going to build the BCG, just so I could learn to assemble it. But if it's a lot cheaper, I s'pose I could just take it apart and reassemble it. Thanks for the advice, guys.
