I decided to go out and get my first gun. I have always wanted to purchase a firearm. After roaming around here for a bit, I pulled the trigger so to say and found this in a local store. This is a Sun Devil Mfg upper and lower with Magpul throughout. I can't wait to get out and start shooting with it. I already purchased close to 2,000 rounds of ammo and 12 mags to get started. My question is what should I be exactly looking for the first time out to make sure everything is functioning properly? http://imageshack.us/a/img6/2867/ar15e.jpg |

What to look for your first time out? What I do with new stuff is: load one round in the magazine, with the bolt closed and on safe load the magazine in the rifle, sling shot the charging handle, pull the charging handle back enough to do a brass check, release and hit the forward assist. Shoot one round. Make sure the bolt locks to the rear. If you can find the ejected brass, inspect it for anything that looks wrong. Now load two rounds and instead of sling shoting the charging handle use the bolt release to load her up. Shoot both rounds and make sure the bolt locks to the rear. Inspect the brass. If all is well. Go to town and enjoy!
Little tips on marksmanship. The top of the post should be centered in the peep sight and your focus should be on towards the front sight and target. If shooting at a circle target, basically cut it in half with the post. Before you do any adjustments to the sights fire two back to back shot groups with the SAME point of aim(POA) that give you clearly the same information on where your point of impact(POI). Too many people adjust off of one shot which could be a flyer and incorrectly adjust. Most importantly, have fun, lube it up, and shoot a lot. |

Yes, at some point I will probably put a Red Dot with a magnifier. I want to start with irons first though to get the hand of using those. I was out at the girlfriends parents farm shooting with her brother-in-law and was getting pretty accurate shots with his gun. I want to try to master the iron sights before moving on and adding in more complexity. I already have a Harris 6-9" swivel bipod on the way.
Thank you for the tips on the first couple of shots. That is what I was looking for and I should be able to get the brass as I am guessing that I will shoot it out at the farm when we get together for an early Christmas in a couple of weeks. That will be my favorite present. |

good choice, I just put a ALG ACT trigger in my Sun Devil lower (DD upper) last night. It is my favorite lower. Is that a complete Sun Devil assembled rifle? Looks like maybe their comp and their LW50 barrel (also a favorite of mine, one on a LaRue 20" and the other on a Spikes 18"). The UBR is also my favorite stock - you can start to see why I think you made a good choice here. Only thing left is an Aimpoint M4 or T/H1.
ETA: post 556 for me - you will find that is something of a milestone on this site. my little angel holding my Sun Devil with plenty of back-up - note the 2 LW50 rifles still don't have their SWFA SS scopes :( .... also note the Bushmaster has no grip since I took it off while removing the malfunctioning 2stage trigger that is on its way back to RRA. I swear the other 4 ARs are fully functional. </a> Uploaded with ImageShack.us" />
