I've let my Predatar get way too dirty, I broke it down last night and cleaned it with some clp but I dont have an AR specific cleaning kit so I was thinking about buying an OTIS kit....thoughts?
Second, carbeurator cleaner ok or not ok to use? |
| Ill explain further, I have cleaning supplies. I have different solvents but have generally relied on CLP as both my oil and lubricant. I have many different brushes, I have bore snakes, and I have straight rods. I do not have a one piece rod however, that I could update. I was more interested in a chamber brush and the otis cleaning "system" looked simple and convenient. If anyone has a better idea, or a cheaper idea I am all ears. I just want my gun cleaned and lubed in the best possible manner. Best means the cleanest and also the most effectively lubricated. I use the same tools to clean bolt guns, shotguns, and pistols. Obviously not exactly the same, but I would like to get an AR specific cleaning kit, either self assemble one or purchase one. Any suggestions are appreciated. |

NON chlorinated brake cleaner works great for really caked on carbon and is cheap. Carb cleaner can ruin plastics so stay away from it. Penetrating oil is also a good option since it breaks up junk but doesn't strip your preservative oils. I prefer tipton brand rods since they're nonmetallic and can flex quite a bit more without deforming. Their AR chamber kit is great too and doubles as my pistol rod. About the only thing special you need for an AR is a good chamber brush to clean the extension. Everything else cleans just like any other rifle.
I don't like pull-through products because I've seen too many threads about "shit, my Boresnake/Otis is stuck in my barrel!" |

There are two draw back with the otis:
1) the cable could cause the patxh to loosen in the barrel therby getting a patch stuck in barrel. The only way to get it out is with a rod. 2) the cable requires these special patches with cut out on them. I buy them in 1k bulk. If you do get a otis be sure to get the ar specific as it comes with a bone tool and chamber brush. It also comes with a picker and all that. Never had the patxh stuck in the bore myself but I did once had a heck of a time getting a patch to go through when I used it wrong. Overall I love the otis but be sure to have a rod handy as well. Use all of them. I have been using Otis for a while now but only on rifles. |
| I love this place, ask a question get an answer....in fact, get many answers/opinions. Always good to hear from people who actually have experience giving advice instead of just reading advertisements or listening to some random person at a gun store. Now I may buy each part individually and make my own AR specific cleaning kit, or I might go with the AR specific otis kit. I also have some new ideas about how to clean my carrier group. |
