I'm going with an M16A1 clone this time around. For my first retro clone, I wanted either an XM16E1 or an M16A1, and I just had to have the XM16E1, so I built it first. Funny thing is, right after I finished the XM16E1, I really wanted an M16A1. I managed to find an upper from one of those parts kits on the EE for $100 shipped, and I had a few parts left over from my previous build. I also have a type E stock on the way, and NoDak will be getting a call from me soon. I'm really excited about getting to search for parts again. This one is going to take me a while to finish, but I'm not worried, because I have three other AR's to shoot. I really hope that I can find (and be able to afford) an MP 12 barrel for my XM16E1 so that the C MP CHROME BORE barrel that's mounted on it can be moved to the A1.

ETA: That pistol grip is a new one that Dodger57 offered up in Pay It Forward (along with a few others). I really thank him for that.

More parts!

looks like you're off to a good start there....good hunting on the rest of the needed parts

Thanks, crackedcornish. I didn't want to buy one of the kits, because that wouldn't have been much fun for me. Parts should be fairly easy to find (at least I hope so).

I'm also thinking that I won't use those handguards in the picture, because I've shined them up. I have an NOS set that is flat black and will match that pistol grip nicely.

Good luck Plinkr!!  I still need to finish my XM16E1.  You have re ignited the fire for me.

You will like how your M16A1 clone comes out.  I know I did.  Parts are fairly easy to come by as long as you are doing a relativly late one.  Check with Apex see what they have left.
Godd luck,
Ralph

LongTrang, that made me smile.

Ralph, the only thing APEX has that I would possibly need (unless I buy a complete BCG) is the cam pin. I don't think I want to pay shipping for something that small and that I probably won't need.

Agreed.  I haven't checked there lately.  They were good to me for my stuff.  I also agree with not using the kit.  Most of the fun is the hunt and anticipation of locating parts/accessories.
I have started my XM16E1 and looking forward to the next part.
regards,
Ralph

Very nice parts Sir! The XM16E1 was my first build and I still love it.

Thanks, fellas. I bought a charging handle for it a couple of hours ago. If I keep that up, it'll be finished before I know it.

It just keeps growing!

Got the charging handle, stock, buffer, and buffer spring in the last couple of days.

For post 2800 I dedicate it to Plinkster's new AR build.

I was looking through your parts and was hoping I could "pay it forward" with something that you need.  But is looks like you have everything already that I would be able to give to you.

I am on the same boat as you are, man. You are a tad ahead of me, but I am catching up; have a small set of parts coming in to make the barrel assembly complete, including a duckbill flash hider with crush ring and the triangular handguard cap this week; this is what I have so far...

(extra points for the ugly foot)

Oh, andf another thing...

We shop in the same store too... FREAKY!

That's just the problem. I'm not trying to finish this one up that fast, but the way I've been going, it'll be done before the middle of September.

Thanks for your support, LongTrang!

I've been told that a lot of people look up to me, but the bed sheets man? Come on.

It looks like you're ahead of me because you have a barrel and a bolt, both of which I lack. Are you going for a 602? I'm loving that shiny furniture!

going for the same rifle on your avatar. Partial fence lower with 604 upper.

Now, that's gonna be awesome. If I ever find an original (and affordable ) 605 upper, I'm going to use it to build an early partial fence 604 like you're building.

Not to nit pick but the receiver in plinkr415's avatar is a 603 (XM16E1), not a 604.

That's not a forward assist, it's just some extra anodizing buildup!

looks like both you fella's have a nice start on your projects.

Black-Tiger when you are talking about using a "crush ring" are you referring to a crush washer?  I'm sure you are aware that retro's used split washers and that the FH's don't require timing

Yup. The forward assist is one of my favorite features.

Here's the rifle I'm going to build if I find that 605 upper:

I love that rifle in the picture. Oddly enough, it looks a LOT like my XM16E1.
