[ARCHIVED THREAD] - My SCAR 22 Build (Page 1 of 2)

I think I'm far enough along to unveil my SCAR 22. This is not a 10/22 dropped into an airsoft body. It is a WE Tech Gas Blow Back SCAR-L, completely gutted, and built into a real, functioning, .22 rifle. Why did I choose this airsoft rifle for the project, good question. I purchased one for my son and as I examined it, I was surprised at the quality of the one piece extruded aluminum receiver. You have to hold one to really appreciate it. I won't say the receiver is as solid as my Sig, but its far more solid than my GSG and the ISSC. A friend of mine had a ISSC SCAR clone, and I wasn't impressed. I put a CMMG .22 magazine in, and to my surprise, it locked up, as if it were made for it. At  this point, I decided to model  the rifle in Solidworks, so I could compare it to a standard AR. I found models of the AR, which allowed me to develop relationships between the barrel, bolt, magazine and hammer.  I used the CMMG .22 conversion and their barrel. I designed a trunion to position the barrel in the receiver with the correct relationships between the magazine, trigger housing and bolt. I designed a trigger pack, with standard AR components, to fit the existing lower, using the existing selector hole, with a newly designed selector. The selector requires 90 degree rotation, so "S" is safe and "A" is semi-auto (the "1" position is still safe). I had to use the reduced power Hammer and Trigger springs. The barrel was turned down to fit the receiver and ancillary components (I'll dura-coat it later). This description is vastly over simplified. It took a lot of work to get to this point. In the end, it is fully functional, minus the bolt hold open (I had to remove that). Best of all, it is a exact replica of the real FN SCAR 16, and uses standard CMMG and Black Dog AR .22 mags. And, it disassembles like the real thing, no special tools needed. One push pin to drop the lower, slide the stock down, remove the spring loaded rear bolt carrier support, and remove the CMMG bolt. The charging handle is non-reciprocating. This rifle is still a work in progress, I have several items to "tidy up". Here are a few pics. What do you think?

SCAR 22 Function Testing

SCAR 22 Disassembly

I think I finally figured out why I'm getting light primer strikes. Due to space limitations, my FCG is .060" backwards of where it should be. I knew this but didn't think it would affect function. I recently noticed the hammer as it rested on the bolt and firing pin (see pic below). The top of the hammer is hitting the lop of the bolt, restricting contact with the firing pin. Since I can't move the FCG forward the .060" I need, I will modify the face of the hammer to allow square contact with the firing pin (see pic below). I haven't done this yet, what do you think?

That is simply... AWESOME! Having a KAC PDW gbb I can see what you mean by how impressive some of the airsoft clones are. Having said that what are the legal requirements for manufacturing a rifle from what wasn't a registered lower or receiver before? I understand dropping a 10/22 receiver into a different body because that is the registered part, but unless I'm missing something here aren't you manufacturing a new rifle? Again, very very impressive work. Nice job.

[#4]
You are correct, I manufactured a rifle, which is not against the law. The airsoft rifle is simply, raw material. Being a toy,  it was never a firearm, it was never imported as firearms parts, therefore, the foreign firearms parts count is zero. The airsoft receiver is not a firearms receiver, it's nothing more than a aluminum extrusion. I should be completely 922 compliant. When its completed, I'll have the receiver marked, per BATFE requirements. Also, it can never be sold.

My opinion is what you've built is much better than this:

http://jga.anschuetz-sport.com/index.php5?produktID=763&menu=556&sprache=1&produktShow=detail

And it is much better because it uses CMMG and Mil-Spec components in a "chassis"
that replicates the SCAR exactly.

A very nice project gun and I look forward to seeing some accuracy results.

would love to buy the parts from you for the conversion if you decide to make them

I added a short video of the disassembly. Keep in mind, the rear bolt carrier support needs a little work.

I've thought about it. I designed and  had manufactured the trunion, fire control housing, selector, rear bolt carrier support, charging block and modified the CMMG WASP barrel, to fit the We Tech  SCAR-L GBB (version 1). I don't have access to newer versions or other manufactures models, and don't know if my parts would work in them. Hell, I can't guarantee my parts will work in all version 1 WE Tech SCAR-L's.  Its not out of the question, but it may not be very practical or cost effective. I will continue to refine the design for ease of manufacturing and cost.

when i saw the title "scar build" i figured it would be some guy with a issc scar with some magpul stuff attached to it but boy was i wrong. That is too cool. Whats the overall weight?

Here is a vid of my third range trip.  Still working out the bugs. The first trip resulted in failure to extract and short stroking. I installed 3.5 lb hammer and trigger springs, which eliminated the short stroking. The second trip to the range resulted in failure to extract. Polishing the chamber (i,e, buzzing the chamber) corrected this problem. Now, the only problem is light primer strikes. I will eliminate (2) coils on the firing pin spring, which I think will minimize this issue. Still, not too bad for a first time build. Keep in mind, all of the components are new, you will have issues with any new firearm until you break if in.

Impressive! I'd like to see some detailed pics of the parts that you fabricated and how they are different from standard (CMMG bolt for one). Hope you work all the bugs out.

Seems like you got a lot less failures when you were gripping the magazine. I noticed that when you weren't holding the mag, the mag had a lot of front to back movement in the well. Not sure if that has anything to do with it or not.
7/4/2013 7:04:12 PM EDT
[#21]
The CMMG bolt is standard, no modifications. The CMMG WASP barrel was turned down. I had to design and make the: Trunion, FCG housing, safety selector, rear bolt carrier support (spring loaded), and a little block from the charging handle to engage the CMMG bolt.

As for the magazine wobble, you are correct. What you couldn't see me doing during the test firing; I was intentionally pushing the magazine in all directions to observe the affect. I will be shimming the mag well front to back and laterally, once I have a better feel for what works best.

Overall, I'm very pleased with the functioning. Grouping was not bad, although shifted left. I think my front sight is slightly canted to the right. I have not yet pinned the front sight base, it's only held on with a set screw.

Nice job!

By the way, it is perfectly legal to sell a gun you made for yourself. You couldn't have made it with the intention of selling it but if you build it and later change your mind and want to sell it you're completely legal.

Somewhere in China, there is a manager banging his head against the wall when he realizes his latest shipment to his largest market is about to be seized by BATFE agents.  Very nice work, OP.  I tiptoe in your footsteps.

Yea, I figure the airsoft guys will be pissed. Because of me, the BATFE is going to ban airsoft. I doubt it. What I did, can't be done by the average person, in their garage. I have several hundred hours invested building 3-D solid models of the We Tech SCAR, AR-15 and the conversion parts. I also have several friends who are tool makers, without whom, I couldn't have done this. Anyone who thinks an airsoft gun can be readily converted to fire live ammo, is an idiot!

Try telling that to the govt of the UK...rant over.

Seriously though I don't think that a lot of people would understand half the work you did on the rifle to get it firing. I once made a WH40k Bolt-gun that fired 4-10 shells (long time ago). A) it took forever and b) the finished product was really just a wrap around for an existing gun. What you have done here is amazing. Kudos and keep up the good work.

sounds like a good idea. How do you plan on adding material to the face of the hammer?
8/24/2013 12:03:12 PM EDT
[#42]
I'm not going to add material, although its not a bad idea. I plan on removing material, 8 degree should allow for good square contact with the firing pin. My only concern is; will the hammer and trigger sear engage when the bolt moves rearward pushing the hammer down. Worst case, I ruin a hammer
