I just thought I would post a few pictures of what I have been working on...   A extra heavy lower for my target AR...

unfortunately, I can not figure out how to get the pictures to actually show up in the thread, so here are some links...

Pictures of the lower parts

I have not finished removing the tabs that held each part into the blocks of aluminum yet, nor have I done the final fitting.  That will happen when I get the pins and screws I need from mcmaster.com.

basically, I wanted a heavy lower for my heavy rifle  (this freeing up the light weight lower for a car length project).  so the slab sides made it both heavy and look unique.  I still also have some engraving to do on it after I bead blast it.   I am still debating whether to bead blast and then polish the flat surfaces or just bead blast them...

I still have to make the extended length button for the magazine release and the custom length selector switch.  Easy enough to do but I have not had time yet.

The magazine catch (not the button for actuating it) is hidden inside along with everything else I could hide.  It will be a bit tricky to put together but it will look good once done as not very many parts poke through the surface.

thanks!  I have to get some more pictures taken...  now if the snow would let up (24" so far in about that many hours) so I can go get the taps I need....

I found a local place that will hard anodize clear the whole thing for 85$.   If you are wondering why I split it up the way I did, it was mainly to fit it on a benchtop mill.  This whole thing, except the selector, is being made on a taig.

Even with how it currently is, it will be a stretch.  I have a few tweaks I want to make to the files (mostly tolerances...  everything was initially drawn at perfect) and then I will, if I can figure out how, post the solid models up for folks who may wish to use them...

I just finished the selection handle and the extended length magazine release button today.

To link the pix, click on the one you want to link, then right click for "view image". That will give you a page with only your picture on it. Next copy the http address info from the brower and use that info for the next stage. Down in the ar15 editor the button with the mountain or whatever it is is the picture link button. Open that and paste the http address you got from the browser earlier. that's it.

some preliminary fitting out pictures.  I still have to tap the ring for the buffer tube and ream a thou or so off some holes so the thing isn't quite so tight...  but the magazines fit well, trigger fits and operates properly.  Mag release need to be threaded in a bit further but it works.

lets try this whole embedded picture thing again...

thanks for the kind words.  I need to tweak some of the parts need some tolerance stackup added and then I will post the files for all to use and abuse as you see fit.

thanks

Very nice work, would love to have one like it but with the magwell solid for my 50BMG upper that I have on order.
I do have 3 blank lowers on order, one of which is going to be for the 50.
I dont have a mill but do have the jigs fron CNC to do it all on my drill press as long as I take my time at it, measure twice, cut once.

interesting...  After doing this I am thinking about building one as light and strong as possible...  I am considering one with carbon fiber sides and just the minimum of parts metal.   Magwell might be a bit difficult, but I think I can solve that by spacing it correctly and then using the right thickness of uhmw/acrylic adhesive tape to form the inner structure as needed.     such as mcmaster.com part number 7344A41

but one project at a time...
