So I love shooting AR's and I think it's time to buy one before the prices really go up. I'm thinking about ordering a Del-Ton with the configuration below:
16 LW Rifle Kit -Barrel:DTI 16" 1x9 Light Weight Barrel 16 Rifle Kit / Rifle -Handguards:DPMS Free Float Tube Rifle Kit / Rifle -BC:Chrome Bolt & Carrier Rifle Kit / Rifle -Buttstock:M4 Buttstock - Black Rifle Kit / Rifle -Grips:A2 Grip - Black Rifle Kit / Rifle-Carrying Handle:None Rifle Kit / Rifle-Flash Hiders:Phantom Flash Hider Rifle Kit / Rifle-Gas Blocks:YHM Single Rail Gas Block Rifle Kit / Rifle-Lower Parts:Lower Parts Kit with Rock River Arms 2 Stage Trigger Rifle Kit / Rifle-T Handle:Standard Charging Handle with Badger Tac Latch Rifle Kit / Rifle-Uppers:Flat Top Upper with M4 Feed Ramps That comes to $728 YHM Flip Up Front Sight for Gas Block $65 Flip Up Rear Sight $79 CMMG Lower $130 This comes to about $1000.00, do you guys think thats a good value all together? I want to eventually put an EO Tech or Aimpoint on it with the flip up sights but want to get used to those sights first. Would I be better off buying a pre-built rifle somewhere else? I'm trying to keep costs down as well but still want to have a decent AR and not have to buy too much stuff that I'll just end up replacing quickly. Thanks for any advice |

I am no authority on this but here's my .02
Wait times are through the roof right now some places are at like 18 weeks for their product, once you order it you are NOT guaranteed that you will get it. They may cancel orders so they can catch up back orders. Now depending on how quickly obama get's the big gun ban ball rolling you may not be able to re-order. If you look around you can find some pretty decent deals from individuals selling AR's. Like the saying goes, 1 in the hand is worth 2 in the bush! (ok i really have no fucking clue what that actually means but it sounded good there )

Your list looks fine but there are other companies out there besides del-ton, be aware of all of them. It looks like you've done good so far but be aware that it's been pretty busy in this market that you are trying to get into. For instance Del-Ton {scroll down}.
They are somewhat similar across the board with ranging B.O. dates. At this point the complete bum rush should be evening out {maybe not slowing down} and the waits are going to catch up for some and for others it will stay the same. Find what you can and just get your order in somewhere and get on the list. Check on the EE, Group Buy and at local gunshops for who has the greatest selection of AR's. They intermittently get shipments in and you need to get on communication terms to have an idea of when they'll come in. Just remember that your spot can always be cancelled while you are searching other places, you're going to be on a good wait with del-ton, trust me. I waited a little over 1 month to recieve my mid-length kit and they luckily had all of the different parts in to put mine together. There were {and still may be} those who were waiting on the 20" chrome lined barrels that the chromers weren't shipping to Del-ton and they may still be waiting, I don't know. Anyways sorry for the lengthy post, but look before you leap... another freakin phrase |

Thanks, I'm definately trying to find out backorder times. I'm considering buying a used AR and fixing it up if I need to. If I have to do that are there any brands I should specifically stay aways from, or anything specific to the AR that I should check? Used AR's are like buying a used car in certain respects. Some people ride them harder than others and some don't do maintenance, period. Look at the brass deflector first and that should give you an idea of ABOUT how much it's been shot. If it has brass still on it, try and clean it off to see if there is any base metal showing. Function test the Fire Control Group with an engaged safety and then dissengage and dry fire it and also do a function check of the Bolt Carrier Group. If you can ask to break the two halves down and pull the BCG to see what the barrel looks like, do it. If it's dirty, then the person didn't care and probably didn't clean it much, any. There also may be slop between the upper and lower, that's normal as long as it isn't excessive. Anyways, the upper where the BCG sits in will probably have some wear marks from metal to metal along with the BCG. Or you can go with new and not have to worry about anything about a previous owner and that B.S.. Just keep your fingers and ears out there searching. But try to get to a shop {reputable if possible} and ask to see an AR or two if they have any, get a feel for what you're looking for and ask if you can dry fire them once, it won't hurt a centerfire. Stay away from Hesse/Vulcan/Blackthorne and now some other company name {they're all the same company, just switched names} and you should be good to go. Also, if you haven't done so check in your Hometown Forum to see if anyone could help you out with some local shops that are good. Edit: They may even show you their AR, no guarantees. Or meet you for a shoot day provided you have some ammo. |
