I recommend putting the safety on when your not using it though.

It won't let you put it on safety unless there is a round in the chamber.

to put it on safe, you just need to rack back the charging handle, and then flip the selector switch to safe. and nice new AR.

I store my rifles with the hammer released not on safe.  The springs in the lower are not under as much tension.
