O.K feel free to make fun of me.  I almost did not post this question but Its driven me nuts not knowing...  I just bought a rra.  I have not even shot it yet.  I Will be going out this week and plan to post a range report later.  But..... today I decided to give it is first tear down and clean before the big outing.  I printed several tear down posts and followed them to the "t"(I think)  After putting her all back together I "cocked?" the rifle and dry fired it several times to assure proper assembly.  Im sure i did this 6-7 times with working results and then the charging handle fell back.  The trigger did not fire.  So there i am with this handle flopping around and Im thinking want the #@#@#!!!  I started to remove the upper to investigate and it does not want to seperate...I swear I just looked and cussed at it and I hear a big sproing, the bolt advanced and it seperated fine after that.  I visually looked at all the peices and reinstalled.  It seems fine now.   But what happen?  I want to know so I dont do it again...

Sounds like you unknowingly locked the bolt to the rear. I have also tried to open an AR with the bolt locked open. Welcome to the club, BTW. Maybe someone else can think of a clever insult.

Haha that would be my guess.  If your charging handle just slides backwards, first of all, it wasn't latched like it should be, and secondly, as mentioned above, your bolt was locked to the rear.  Just tap the bolt catch next time, and hopefully your fingers are clear of that charging handle if it isn't latched.

If you want to do that again (like if you're at a public range and they require you remove your mags and leave the bolt open), pull back on the handle.  While holding the handle back, press down on the bottom of the bolt release (only item on the left side).  Your bolt will then stay open.  Dont forget to push forward and lock your handle back in place though.   This is generally a safe position to keep your rifle in if others are around so they can easily see you dont have a round in the chamber.

From this position, when you insert your mag, all you have to do is press the top of the bolt release and it will slam forward, chambering a round, and you'll be ready to pull the trigger.
