First production run with our new A1 dies were done with 6061 T6511 to be "truer" to the early production Colts.

It had nothing to do with cost as the difference was maybe a dollar at the time.

Unfortunately the forgings were getting dinged up during handling because 6061 is softer pre-heat treat than 7075.


So I had Anchor Harvey switch to 7075 T6 511 to avoid this.

Mike i see the first ones were A2 forgings did you have to reprofile?

Interesting experience on the 6061.  I figured the dies for the first run weren't finalized and the 6061 was easier on the pre regular production run forging dies if they were made from a lighter weight test sample type material.

Yes, way too much work.

Then we cut everything from the A1 forgings. Still too much.

So we had more dies made.



Also, I didn't like how skinny the front pin boss is on a reprofiled A2 lower forging.

When we designed the dies we beefed up the pin boss substantially.
