A you can see by my registration date, I'm new to AR's, both the rifle and this site. I love the wealth of knowledge and ridicule heaped on all of the posts I read. So now it's my turn. I have limited experience with AR's. I fired about a hundred rounds out of a friends Colt Carbine about ten years ago. Had a great time, but never got hooked. Now I want one, so I've purchased a Bushmaster A3 Shorty (no muzzle attachment). I hope to have it payed off and delivered next week. I've read alot about Bushies with barrel index problems. My questions are these: Has Bushmaster figured out whats causing this? Out of spec upper? Out of spec barrel/barrel extension? Out of spec front sight base, or installation? I understand that this is a current problem, does any one know if they have identified a range of serial numbers that could be affected by these problems? I do not regret buying the Bushy, I read nothing but good comments about them on this site. But this reminds me of when I got involved in 1911 pistols about 15 years ago. Bought a NIB Colt Govt. Model. Had to send it back to Colt twice just to get it to work. Learned my lesson with that one. Now I've learned to build my own. I will probably be doing this with AR's as well. I know I will never be satisfied with a stock firearm, of any kind, but I was hoping I could have some fun with my new AR and learn its function and construction before I started making adjustments. I hate the thought of having to send a new firearm back for adjustment just so I can enjoy it. Answers, comments, ridicule, harmonious discontent with life? Thanks |

Yes Bushmaster knows its what causing the problem - no it has nothing to do with out-of-spec parts (that is the least of your worries with the Bushmaster). As a matter of fact the issue is address in their FAQ on the website. The problem is occasionally the assembler isn't paying close attention to what he is doing and OVER TORQUES the barrel nut. This can cause the index pin to bend or shear. That causes the indexing problem. The guy is probably getting tired from buildind at the rate of 50,000+ AR-15s a year - that or poor training/attention to detail. If you have the problem you'll know as soon as you zero. If your rear sight is all the way to one side you have the problem. Now its not really a problem. As long as you can zero you're fine - its just cosmetic at that point. If its over 12 clicks off from the Center Bushmaster will correct the issue for free. Relax - enjoy the rifle. |
