| Guy on Reddit claiming he saw a Crane report that the Noveske rifles are experiencing barrelife shorter than 10,000 rounds and some other things about bolts breaking and the handguard getting hot. All hearsay with no proof as per usual. I can attest to the handguard thing but most rifles do that and the thicker the handguard the longer it retains that heat. The barrel thing wouldn't surprise me though since SS doesn't make for a high volume of fire. |
|
Are those full Geissele rifles or G upper on Noveske lower?

If the commenter is correct, I would bet the availability of spare parts for the noveske is far more plentiful than spare parts from HK. I would assume the noveske guns probably have a shorter maintenance schedule. I’m sure it’s a great compromise for the amount of weight savings you get from the platform. All this being my opinion and nothing more than speculation. |

Link I've always considered it an odd build but not unprecedented. 5SFG did something similar with the LaRue Stealths in 2007, and some SWAT units like Orange County have JP Enterprises 10.5s. But per John Noveske, the barrels should last at least 10k unless you're getting them "hot enough to brand cattle" which isn't hard to do if you're doing shoot houses. Idc if becomes a short lived contract it's still the coolest looking recent one that's actually possible to build. |

Both rifles with the same optic and light and silencer… the 416 is exactly 1 pound heavier. 1.6 pounds heavier with the standard Quad rail / RAHG. I did see on a recent podcast with Trey Lindsey where he mentioned the noveske was an improvement to the 416 but he preferred his 416 for sentimental reasons. Additionally he mentioned he didn’t get to deploy with the noveske but said it was a quality rifle. |

Yeah with higher powder volume 5.56 coming out along with other high velocity intermediate cartridges barrel tech is gonna be big. SS is already starting to lose the accuracy edge on CL. But contracting a new rifle must mean other issues since you could just contract ARMAD or Melonite or M249 grade replacement barrels. I will note that this appears to be the first JSOC departure from 10.X" for their main CQ carbine. |

With all the testimonials starting that the HK416 has crazy barrel life, reliability, and accuracy, makes you wonder what was the driving factor in changing rifles. Was it simply weight and product support? I can understand CAG moving to the sig rifle since it seems like that’s something they’ve always wanted but the technology wasnt there when the 416 was adopted… and one of their own in a top job at sig helps too. |

HK has been using Aubert et Duval, which has various proprietary alloys for barrels. I don't know the exact barrel metallurgy for the 416 but the MR556A4 is using 32CrMoV12-10 aka ARMAD. A lot of barrel longevity comes from the hardness of the steel and the limiting factor with making barrels out of increasingly harder metals is tool life. It would be interesting to see how a Titanium or Inconel barrel performs but no one is willing to make or mass produce those. FN's "Machine Gun Steel" used in M249s and M240s and allegedly some brands like Noveske M249 and Hodge barrels is 41V45 which is more standard but with a thicker chrome lining. The US has experimented with linings such as Stellite for M60 barrels but it is apparently difficult. The gist of barrel tech now is to either get a factory capable of making exceptionally hard alloys or some proprietary lining like extra Chrome, Melonite, Stellite, etc. The 416 platform has been largely stripped away for lighter rifles and the only thing they're keen on keeping is the barrel life. |

Does it make sense to pick up a whole new rifle just for the reasons mentioned above? There are other drop in handguards for the NSR barrel nut and if barrel life is a problem there are an infinite amount of choices for barrels with it being an Ar15. |

This might be going a little off topic, but what drop in rails are there for the NSR barrel nut? |

Just for clarification, some of the rails mentioned like the ones on SMOS website and the THYF Hot rail arn't necessarily drop in. Though the hole patterns are the same, they use a shorter, non reversible barrel nut. So you have to swap out the barrel nut if you want to use one of these. SMOS: Attached File Obviously, the command has worked with SMOS to make rails that are compatible with the Noveske barrel nuts but just wanted to clarify for those who may be interested in trying to replicate the rail or use a different one like the hot rail. |

Can confirm that I also heard from an OEM for SOLGW that they did win a contract(s). Not sure if he was referring to this one, but they did secure one or more. |

Average was 2720 on the 62gr; pretty good for 10.5 barrel. I wonder if the command using new 5.56 ammo that is lighter weight than the 70gr TSX. I remember tinycrumb mentioning his barrel did great with 55gr. |

The barrel thing wouldn't surprise me though since SS doesn't make for a high volume of fire. Burning out a 10.5 barrel in under 10k rounds isn't really that surprising at all. They're probably shooting the most aggressive courses of fire you possibly could, with a lot suppressed. I was speaking to Chuck Pressburg and he said government suppressed mk18s are usually dead in 6500 rounds when shooting extremely aggressively, but were almost always dead in 8 or maybe 9 if you're more careful. |

I'd be curious to try a 62 TSX load, but it sure does like the Controlled Chaos bullet. |

| Earliest photo I can think of that we know the date is somewhere between 2019-2020. Back when everyone thought they were SR-16s. But on a podcast with Trey Lindsey, he states they got the noveskes somewhere around 2017 (though he could be misremembering and/or they were only given to a handful of dudes in each squadron for T&E). |
