While I have always liked the regular MK18 better than the EOD variant, I always thought they were very interesting looking carbines.  Hope you like it.

Don't have as much information on these - I'm still not sure whether they're properly MK 18 MOD 0s that have been re-built "in house" or if they are CQBRs.

Based on what little information I've gathered, I'm tempted to say that they're ordered under NSN 1005-01-498-1913: "Navy Issue M4A1 CQBR Upper Receiver with 10 inch Barrel" based on the fact that KAC M4QD comps do not appear standard - and it appears that prior to (and alongside) use of these short carbines, Navy EOD used Colt RO727 "M16A2 Carbines," a functional (if not directly related) predecessor to the M4A1:

The first photo that sinlesssorrow posted shows what's clearly an A1 lower forging - almost all Navy MK 18 MOD 0s have been built on R603 M16A1 lower receivers - however, because the RO727 was a commercial / export variant, even though it was designated "M16A2," many came from the factory with A1 lower forgings marked "M16A2," therefore, it could be one of those as well.

It's also apparent here:

This lower is clearly a "Type 1" A2 lower forging, a very early variant, and almost certainly *not* factory, as the upper is an engraved "C" Cerro Forge upper, not a raised "C," "AF" upper that would be the proper vintage for the lower pictured.  It also appears to be the modern "flat black" anodizing compared to the lighter "Sporter Gray" anodizing of the lower.  The presence of a castle nut also strongly implies a stock replacement, as RO727s used lock nuts with round holes.

My current assumption is that when NSW divested their RO727s in favor of M4A1s, the RO727s rolled back to other specialized conventional units like the CBs and EOD.  EOD, gaining prominence in modern operations were able to order SOF-specific CQB receivers from Crane for use with their RO727 lowers in lieu of M4A1s - no need for a complete weapon system like the MK 18 MOD 0.

Originally, they would probably be pulled from stocks already available for NSW use and equipped with M4QD comps, while later ones could be earmarked upon delivery for EOD and be delivered bare muzzle or with an A2 comp.

This of course, is all speculation.  I haven't really researched it.

That said - from the 5.56x45MM Timeline: http://www.thegunzone.com/556dw-15.html

March 2005:

Fleet and Industrial Supply Center-San Diego (FISCSD), on behalf of the Navy's Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group One, issues a presolicitation notice for 104 Carbine M4 Extended Length handguards. The preferred design is a two piece chassis that mounts piggyback to flattop upper receivers and fits around fixed M4 front sight towers. The model must be tan in color. The handguards must accept detachable MIL-STD-1913 rails and to be equipped with two 4-inch rails, two 2-inch rails, and one 6-inch rail. In a separate presolicitation notice, EOD Group One also desires 56 tan forward vertical handgrips with self contained bipods for attachment to Picatinny rail mounts.

June 2005:

FISCSD, on behalf of the Navy's EOD Group One, issues a sole-source solicitation to Insight Technology for 142 M6X Tactical Lights. This amount is later increased to 163.

July 2005:

(Separately, at a later date, EOD Group Two also adopts the Magpul M93B stock.)

FISCSD, on behalf of the Navy's EOD Group One, issues a sole-source solicitation to Southeastern Weaponry Research (SWR) for 609 Grip Pod Forward Vertical Handgrips with Self Contained Bipod (Polymer Version).

FISCSD, on behalf of the Navy's EOD Group One, issues a sole-source solicitation to Abrams Airborne Manufacturing (Vltor) for 433 Carbine M4 Extended Length (model #EL) handguards and 97 Five-Position Receiver Extensions (Item #RE-1).

August 2005:

FISC-Norfolk, on behalf of the Navy's EOD Group Two, issues a sole-source solicitation to Austin Precision Products (LaRue Tactical) for Special Operation-Peculiar Subsystems Scope Mounts and associated rings for the M4A1 and Mk 14 Mod 0 weapon systems. These include 650 LT102M CompM2 QD Mounts, 464 LT100M ACOG QD Mounts, and 13 LT139-1 SPR/M4 EER QD Mounts.

FISCSD issues a sole-source solicitation to Trijicon for 217 Model TR21 weapon scopes, 1.25-4x BAC with amber reticule.

FISCSD issues a sole-source solicitation to Austin Precision Products (LaRue Tactical) for Special Operation-Peculiar Subsystems Scope Mounts and associated rings. I get that, im 38, probably not in the cards for me at this point!  LOL.  But, if that is what you are/did, then big kudos to you my man.  Thanks for the service.

@Augee, so are these Crane built?  What barrel profile are these?  Seeing as I don't have a tax stamp, I am thinking about something in the 14.5'' neighborhood.

Also, what is the deal with the West coast/East coast???  Wasn't that the same way with the USMC Sam-R's???  Why the difference?

Thanks guys for the great posts and replys.  I appreciate it.  L2B

Barrel profile should be standard government.

I can't say for certain, but I would say they are not Crane built beyond the fact that they provided the uppers as they order them sole-source directly from Colt and they're a "Crane weapon system" (versus say one that originates out of TACOM).  As far as assembling them to 727 lowers, installing rails, and installing stocks, I would guess that that was done on the Group level, either in San Diego or Norfolk since the congifuration that they're in is neither type classified through Crane (MK 18 MOD 0) nor does it resemble anything Crane builds (Crane, like all "builders" almost seems to have specific "tastes" when it comes to aftermarket components, as does the AMU [Army Marksmanship Unit] and PWS [Precision Weapons Systems]).

The East Coast and West Coast thing is just an artifact of having two oceans seperated by a big landmass to cover - both sides of the country have self-sustaining, relatively discrete central supply systems - it sounds like EOD Group 1 got Fleet and Industrial Supply Center-San Diego to order them a lot of special stuff - FISC-Norfolk seems to have gotten a lot less stuff.

The "West Coast" SAM-R was just an M16A4 with an ACOG on it - just like most of the Army's "SDM-Rs" are just M4s with ACOGs.  The SDM-R is really more appropriately the 3ID SDM-R, and really, the colocation of the AMU and 3ID at Fort Benning made that a possibility.  Likewise, the SAM-R was developed and built by PWS in Quantico, Virginia, and is the "East Coast" SAM-R.  PWS is a pretty small outfit though, and they build all the Marine Corps specialty weapon systems and are always backlogged - so the SAM-R was dropped in favor of the MK 12 MOD 1 which was being built by Crane, who had more production capacity than PWS.
