I need to purchase 500-600 mags for use at a nuclear facility.  I would like your advice on brand supplier, and if you are a dealer, some info on bulk pricing.

BravoCompany sells them right at 100mags/1000$.  They are D&H/LaBelle with teflon finish USGI style.

Expecting trouble?

Both 44mag.com and Bravo Co (see sponsors above) sell and discount for large orders, like cases of 100....they have the numbers you need for sure.
Recommend NHMTG or D&H - both the suppliers carry one or both.

Are D&H/Labelle top quality?

I am considering ordering some D&H from Bravo to test on the range.

FWIW we are not expecting trouble but we are prepared for it, and will continue to be in the future.

How does D&H compare with the mags from Brownelles, or with the mags we purchased a few years ago directly from Bushmaster?

As far as USGI magazines go D&H is #1 in most people's books. HKs cost 30-50 bucks a piece and are considered by many to be the "very best" but at that price 500-600 mags would break the bank even if they were discounted heavily.  I don't think they are available in that quantity anyway.

NHMTG is the same as OKAY same as COLT.  They are by far the very best USGI/mil spec 30 rounders.  For your purposes, I would also cintact MAGPUL and would not hesitate using PMAGS

It looks like I can save a couple of dollars per mag by going with D&H as opposed to Center or NHMTG.  Is there a specific reason why they are better than D&H?

Is there any reason D&H is not up to par.

FWIW I contacted Magpul about the PMAGS, and was told that they were shipping out some demo mags to us to try out, but 3 weeks later, no demo mags have arrived, so I am considering other options.

We are running Bushmaster M4's right now, and using Bushmaster magazines which are functioning fine.

Yes, this is pretty well known in the industry.
_______

D&H was unavailable for a like 6 months earlier this year because they had a major contract with the Israeli Defense Force.  Okay and Center are current providers to the US military, as is Brownells.

Any of these brands are going to be what you want.  If I were in your shoes I would get more then one brand.  I would also upgrade the followers to magpul anti tilt.

No, I sure don't know of any.

The last 6 or so I have received in trades.

D&H was formerly Labelle. They manufactured the Bushmaster grey teflon mags you have now. Bushmaster now sells C Products mags I believe. D&H are high quality Mil-Spec mags and GTG.

I don't think you will be disappointed with Okay, D&H, NHMTG or Center Industries.  I pretty much consider them equivalents.  Each has subtle nuances that make them perceived to be better in one little way or another, but they are for all practical purposes the same.  That being said, I like the teflon finish of the D&H mags and it is something that Okay/NHMTG and Center do not have.  I have probably at least 100 D&H mags in black and grey both.  Many came from Bravo Co.

What I would recommend is buying 10 D&H's from Bravo or 44mag (also good place) and 10 NHMTG's from 44mag and you and your men put them through their paces.  See which you like the best.

Actually, for an armed security type detail I would lean heavily toward giving the Pmag a chance as well (little more $$$ though) - pick up a couple for T&E with the other two and see what you think.  IME they feed even more smoothly than all the mags mentioned thus far, and 44mag/Bravo Co both have a fresh stock of the Gen. III's.

I am curious about your plans.

How many rifles do you have for these 500 mags?  Will the mags be stored loaded or some in use and some stored for later? (nothing wrong with storing loaded)

9/8/2007 4:56:50 PM EDT
[#23]
That seems like good advice.   I have already ordered ten D&H from Bravo, and will order ten of the other two tomorrow.

I really appreciate the assistance.  I have been in the Nuclear Security world for a while, and was a Marine prior to that, but this is the first time that I have been involved in equiping a Security Force from the ground up for a new facility.

If some of you could pike your heads over to the Light/Laser forum and answer my question about Pentagon Lights I would really appreciate it.

9/8/2007 5:10:08 PM EDT

for obvious reasons I can't indicate exactly how many rifles we are talking about, but I can tell you the following:

1.  These mags will be in addition to mags that we already have on hand that were purchased with the rifles, and in addition too those that came with the rifles.

2.  As a general rule, 400 or so of these mads will be loaded and carried daily.

3.  100 or so for training.

4.  Duty mags are loaded all the time, but used at least monthly for quals or training.

5.  The environment is dusty, and windy with little moisture.  Picture Baghdad without the two rivers...

No, we have never caught an officer sleeping.  Our security force is not like the ones you read about.  We have a group made up of 40% police officers with 10+ years of expereince, 45% Military with combat experience, 10% with some military or Law enforcement background, and 5% other related experience with a Bachelors degree at a minimum.

This is not a Wackenhut security force.

Our guys are pros, and deserve the best gear.

Not to mention they are paid accordingly!!!

I would think that the requirement to store loaded PMAGS with that little clip on the top installed to keep the feed lips from spreading would be a real no-no for mags that may be used for duty. I sure wouldn't want to be the troop/guard having to first take the plastic clips off all his mags before joining the fight. Too much screwup potential, IMHO.

In the AR15 magazine world I have recently handled dept orders for multiple police departments and all have gone with NHMTG. I also just took in a large Department of Defense order for NHMTG magazines. The reason is they are hands down the most consistantly reliable AR15 magazine on the market. I have had tens of thousands of NHMTG 30rd pass through here in the past few years and have never had a single defective magazine. That is a big selling point when lives could be on the line.

I am highly aware of what Wackenhut does.  I used them as an example because of the dozens of negative stories about them in the media in the last few years.  In the private sector nuclear side of things there reputation is not exactly outstanding primarily for the same reason why there prison guards have a bad reputation...they do not pay well enough to attract the quality people that I expect to have working in my organization.

FWIW I have managed a Wackenhut contract at a nuclear facility, and my wife manages one of there prison contracts for the state.

neither of us have very many good things to say about the Hut as a company...

I know they have a partially deserved bad rep.  I've known a few of their prison guards from back in the day when they handled some Arkansas Prisons.  Kind of a 2 sided company it seems like.

Concur with billclo. The clip requirement issue alone is troubling.
An irresponsible post at best. Moreover, PMags have virtually NO track record yet for reliability. Therefore, arming a security detail at a nuclear facility with such equipment would be unthinkable IMO.

I don't see anything irresponsible about recommending that he test them as well.  Magpul has stated in their own internal testing that loaded mags have been left that way for months with no feed lip creep.  He said these would be cycled in training as well.  The Pmags have a proven enough track record with me to the point that it is Pmags in my home defense guns.

Now that I have more details about what he is doing I would probably go USGI, however, the Pmags are just enough slicker and plenty reliable IME to be worth at least investigating.

There is no need to start this proven VS. unproven shit in another thread, I just suggested he may want to test a couple to see what he thinks.  Why not let the OP and his team be the judge on the mags they prefer?

My understanding is that both mags (Bushmaster/Bravo Co.) are made by D&H.  The only difference being the name stamped into the floor plate.
9/10/2007 11:37:25 AM EDT
[#39]

I know I have had all the major manufacturer mags that are available. At first I was a fan of D&H. But after they had a large lot of mags with feedlip problems. I have shyed away from them ever since. I thought all USGI mags were pretty much the same and went with the one with the best finish. Hence my D&H choice.

After cleaning some of my older mags for refinishing. I noticed that Okay mags seem to have an edge on all other manufacturers. When the mag is dissassembled and your looking inside the body of the mag itself. Okay mags are smooth as silk in the stamped areas where they are put together. You can actually see the difference if you are looking for it. The attention Okay puts in this area has to make a difference in how easily the follower slides inside the mag. Which in turn would improve reliability in the mag. Isn't that the number one concern with mags, reliability?

Upon realizing this fact, Okay mags are the only mag I will have in my possession. Even my beat to crap, no finish, wouldn't pay a dollar for range mags are all Okays. I sold well over 200 mags to get to this point.

Where has it been said that you have to carry the pmags with the feedlip covers installed?

On my pmags it says "Use top impact cover when storing magazines loaded."

The operative word here is STORING. Nowhere does it say "carrying", and that was never the intention, as Magpul has repeatedly stated.

The feedlip cover is a damned good idea, and it allows more options with regards to storing loaded magazines: rather than download stored mags, they can be stored at full capacity, and the clip is added assurence that Bad Things won't happen to the critical feedlips, and that they'll be fully protected against the environment.

From what I understand, yes they say for Storage only. But picture this: a situation goes down, adrenaline is pumping, guys are gearing up. To expect them to remember to take out the mags from the storage pouches on their to-go gear, remove all the clips off the tops of their magazines, reinsert them, and then go is asking for trouble.

Yes the guys who are on patrol may remember to remove them at the start of each shift and put them back on at the end of shift, but they aren't in a hurry. It's just begging Murphy to get ya at the worst possible time. I know I sure wouldn't want to have to do a speed reload, try to insert the mag in the gun, only to discover that dang plastic clip still on the mag. Might get me killed f*cking around with it at a bad time...
