I am thinking about getting my first AR and I am pricing ammo to see if I can afford to shoot it.  I live near a dealer who carries a decent amount of ammo.  I just don't know what is acceptable to shoot and what to stay away from.  Here is some example of what they have.

PPM193 PRVI PARTIZAN 5.56 M193 55GR FMJBT AMMUNITION
WF22355 Wolf 223 55gr FMJ
WFMC22355 WOLF M/C 223 55GR FMJ AMMUNITION
BA22355 Barnaul 223 55gr FMJ Ammunition
FXM193 FEDERAL LAKE CITY M193 AMMO 223 55GR FMJBT

Are any of these good or should I steer clear of any of these?  Thanks.

As anyone whom has read the Ammo Faq tacked atop this forum can tell you, Ya can't do much better than the Lake City XM193 ammunition for the AR.

Many shoot the Wolf and Russian ammo in their rifles also, (not me).

Prvi or LC, Wish I lived near a dealer that carried it at a good price. You must be near Wiedners or Natchez.

If you have to perform a budgetary analysis on the projected capital expenditure of a consumable like ammunition to justify the cost of the hardware (before depriciation), you're probably better off right now with a pimped out .22 with a can.

Besides, zombies will go down with a single head shot from a .22....haven't you been paying attention?

All of the ammo you list is fine.  Whatever rifle you end up buying may not like a particular load, so keep that in mind.  You don't mention how much you want to shoot, or how much you want to keep in stock.

Figure on $0.35 every time you pull the trigger, realistically.

I know I shouldn't be worried about the cost of ammo but as a school teacher with a family, money is something I need to consider.  I have .22s that get used more than anything else but sometimes you just want a little bigger bang.han
Your right. Maybe I don't need to buy one.  That is why I am looking at everything before I jump in.  If I pick up an AR, it is going to get used.  I don't buy guns to look at.  I am just trying to figure out how much I am going to get to use it.  I live close to Wideners.  How much do I want to keep on hand?  I am not one to stock up on huge quantities.  It doesn't look like I can afford to.  I just want to be able to go out and shoot 2 or 3 times a month.

Her's a short answer: Buy the Wolf M/C for plinking/practice,buy the Lc for stashing away(make sure that your rifle likes both types of ammo, though). Some people refuse to shoot Wolf through their rifles. Hell,I'll admit that I was one of tose guys who thought it wasn't good enough for my rifle,or thought that it would mess it up. NOT ANYMORE!!! It's great for plinking and having fun with.
Some people will tell you to shoot high-powered 5.56 to brake in a rifle before shooting Wolf ammo. I never did that. In fact,I did the opposite and shot about 500rds of Wolf before occassionaly shooting the good stuff. haven't had one single malfunction!
I won't say that if your rifle can't shoot Wolf dependably,it's broken, but I would certainly look into why it doesn't.
Most of all,have fun!!

I have got to disagree with just about everyone in the thread. Buy the Wolf Military Classic polymer coated ammo for plinking.

but....

BUY the PVRI m193 for stashing. Current LC ammo is the suck and I will not buy it anymore. PVRI is much higher quality and actually costs less than the LC(federal) xm193.

Just do what I do.  Throw shit on a credit card and hope for a bail out.

if you don't want to spend a lot on ammo, but still want an AR15 type rifle, then get a .22LR version of the AR!

You ask some good questions about ammo acquisition, storage and usage. Many of us here have become ammo hoarders. It's hard for me to shoot quality ammo I bought at less than $200/K and restock it at $400/K. Figure that quality 5.56/.223 ammo will cost you anywhere between $0.35-to-$0.40 a shot as a delivered cost nowadays. If you need something for the zombies to keep in storage, get one of the current deals on Fed XM193 or PRVI M193 for $350/K and hope that the cost comes down soon to get more. After the election, it's anyone's guess if Yomama wins.

Personally, I have purchased two new 22-cal carbines (GSG-5 and K10/22 bull) and 20K rounds of 22-cal ammo at Walmarts for $20/K to satiate my need to repeatedly pull the trigger and to do so at only $0.02 a pull.

There will come a time when ammo will be worth more than gold. Buy ammo!
