I want to take off the A2 stock on my rifle & replace it with an M4 stock...what tools am I going to need & is it pretty simple? Any pointers? I don't know the first thing to do.. |

There's really nothing to it. I just did the same thing, and the only problem I had was getting the original buffer tube off - it was on there pretty tight. You are going to need a car stock wrench to tighten the locking nut, and you can get one on ebay or just buy on from bushmaster like I did. Good luck. PBR |

From Cheaper than dirt: AR-15 Carbine and .45 Tool Steel Removes Bushings AR-15 Carbine and .45 Tool Cleaver tool works to remove the stock from AR-15 carbines and also removes the barrel bushing from 1911 .45 autos. Designed by the military, and very practical for those who shoot both weapons. All steel construction and very handy. New, current production. $ 3.99 AR-15 Combo Tool Steel Remove Nut, Tube, Suppressor AR-15 Combo Tool Designed for .223 shooters, this tool removes the barrel nut, extension tube and flash suppressor from AR-15 Rifles and Carbines. Quality steel, current production. $14.97 I ordered and received these 2 last week. The Barrel nut remover was USGI but the spanner wrench(first item) ended up being stamped DPMS, which is ok. |

I'm told that this kind of wrench is better for working on barrels: Bushmaster Extra Heavy Duty Armorers Wrench They also have this stock wrench: Tele-Stock Wrench for New Style Stocks I've also seen armorer's tools like the one above that have the end of the handle milled as a screwdriver for the stocks. Most places that sell AR parts also sell tools. |

I would suggest that you DO NOT use a 'crescent wrench' or any other kind of adjustable wrench to loosen the buffer tube. The jaws aren't as strong as a fixed 5/8" open end wrench in good condition and just tend to slip off or round off the flats of the tube. Why ruin a good reusable part by using the inappropriate tool. A good mechanic (gunsmith) should not even own an adjustable wrench. Get the right tool for the job. Decent end wrenches are not that expensive. |
