I'm sure this has been discussed many times before, but I can't seem to find a thread on it.

Can anyone recommend a punch set that has a good variety of sizes for AR work. Also, are the brass punches better for this?

Thanks for your input.

Grab the set from Brownells. Make sure you get roll pin punches as they have a small round tip to sit in the hollow of the roll pins. helps prevent slippage.

I also keep a set of nail punches with my tools.  They end up getting used quite often.

Ditto the roll pin punch set from Brownells.  You will never flatten a roll pin or have your punch slip off scratching your receiver if you use the proper tool for the job.  The entire set only costs about $25 and it will pay for itself the first time you use it.

I bought the Sears Craftsman Roll Pin Punches for 9.99 on sale and also have a few of the Brownells. IMO both perform the same. I have never used the brass punches from Harbor Freight but did have some alignment punches and they were junk.

I 2nd the Sears Craftsman 5pc. set for $9.99  If you want to get picky then you can get the Roll Pin 6pc. set for $19.99 Remember they are guaranteed for life so snap away you can always get a new one.

I've built 4 complete AR's with the $10 set.

RPP's have a small bump or nub in the center of the punch that centers in the hole of the roll pin.  I personally don't think they are needed. You most always start a roll pin into a hole with a large punch and finish seating it with the smaller punch. FYI remember masking tape on the surface's you don't want scratched is also a good idea.

Get either Craftsman or Snap-on as punches get broken often so free replacement is good.

Did not see where any one mentioned the roll pin starter punches ,hollow ended so they hold the little devils - they are the greatest thing IMHO. Work great on the rear sight assbly. and the bolt catch pin.

On the roll pin holders, do I need to get all five, or are there only one or two that I need?
