I am totally new to anything AR related. I have experience w/ handguns as I own a few. OK here goes....

With the upcoming elections, I feel now is the time to buy my first long gun. I was going to buy a higher end AK, but since I think I'm going to have enough $ I have decided to buy an AR. I need help with all the simple stuff and recomendations would be greatly appreciated.

The primary uses of this gun will be SD, SHTF, eventually competition, but mostly just plinking for now. The MOST I will be able to scrape up is about $900-1k. Accuracy is definately taking a backseat to reliabilty.

I would like to put a red dot on it and possibly a light. But for now I just want the rifle. I will eventually spend some money on training and accesories, but for now I would just like some basic info about what to look for when I inspect it, reliability, which upper since I eventually plan to use at least a red dot, and whatever else you all feel is important. I would also like to know which mags are a good fit w/ a civi AR. Brand info would be appreciated too.

Caliber/bbl must be 5.56 (not .223 only)and I'd like a 1/7 twist but don't know if I'll have to settle for a 1/9 for the price range. Also, I live in FL so no stupid restrictions apply.

I will get training and a good chunk of ammo when I recover from the initial hit. I know how important that is. I figured this would be the best place to continue my research as I've heard nothing but good things about this site. Sorry the post was so long as I was just trying to get all the basics out of the way.

Do you want to buy a complete rifle or kits? If you build it up from components it may take longer to get the completed rifle but you will be able to get the parts you want when you can afford them. My suggestion is to get a complete 16" barreled upper in 1/7 or 1/9 with the flat top/picatinny railed upper receiver. You can probably get one from $475-$575 if you shop around enough. Then all you need is to get a lower, stripped or complete, and a stock assembly. A completed lower with parts and a stock shouldn't really go past $300-$350. I got my mega lower for $112 and with a match trigger and parts it came out to $239. Added the vltor e-modstock kit for $187 which is a bit pricey for a stock but oh well. I got a bushmaster upper from www.pkfirearms.com for something like $505 and it shipped in less than 3 days. So that rifle assembled was $931 even with a vltor stock and a rra match trigger. Added kns pins for 20 bucks and it is still under a grand for a DIY kit deal. Or you could go to a gun shop and pay up to $1200 for a rifle with a regular trigger and a regular A1 stock.

The magpul Pmags are the best mags bar none. If you don't get the pmags at least get mags with the magpul follower. The aluminum mags with the green followers work, but are cheap shit. Definitely go with the pmags.

FTW

now for my reply...

1in 7 barrel?   dont worry about getting 1:9 unless you are going to be shooting above the factory 62 gr and above all the time.  (and going by your cost restriction for the gun it also sounds like you will be buying the lower cost surplus 55 and 62 like the masses.... if that be the case 1 in 9 will better suit you

for that price point id buy either the RRA entry (950 at last gun show in tampa) or perhaps a stag or S&W flat top. S&W still has the 100 dollar rebate but not for much longer

Wrong. Get yourself an AK if all you want is reliability.

If you want both, then AR15.com is the right place to find answers.

Sorry, perhaps I should have clarified myself, I haven't seen an AR that shoots under 1 1/2" MOA advertised. I meant reliable for the AR platform- I do try to hit what I'm aiming at.heap,
So can someone at least tell me what to look for when I inspect ARs at my local shops? Thanks for the replies and I do know that I don't know enough yet. But in early May, I hope to have made a good decision b/c I will be buying an AR.

Edited: Powder_Burns S&W, DPMS, BM all have basic models for give or take 1k at my usual store. How much more do the flat tops usually run.

(I know f*cking newbs)

What you want is a
LMT Upper $615 with bolt carrier group - order at Bravo Co (see button above)

LMT Lower with telestock and standard trigger - $330 - have your FFL order it direct from LMT

$945

+ FFL fee $20-$50 depending on the dealer
+ handguards (about $20 if you want the standard plastic ones
+ rear sight ($50 - $200 depending on your tastes/needs).

A bit over what you want to spend but it will run and run and run, and be accurate.

ETA:  If you're near Jacksonville visit newARguy and M4Tuna at the Gun Gallery, Neil knows what he's talking about and can set you up with a reliable/accurate AR.
