Im looking to do something with my HBAR Bushy 20" A3 but cant quite figure out which route to take. Its sole purpose will be a varmit rig. However, I just cant make up my mind on what to get for it. I have thought about going the SPR route and get a TROY 13.5 FF rail, low pro gas block and a PRS stock, or a free float tube, I just dont know. Help me figure out what to do with this thing.

I started by taking the varmint route because I wanted long range precision rifle capable of hitting small targets at long distances. I went with a 1/9 stainless 24" bull barrel and worked up a decent 45 grain load.

My first try;

The problem was those little 45 grainers didn't do too well with the wind.  My range has a 500 yard lane and I couldn't shoot well except for the calm summer evenings.

Next I decided to take advice from the guys who shoot long ranges for a living . . . the NRA High Power crowd.  I built an 18" SPR with a 1/7 WOA barrel.  This little beauty allowed me to launch the heavy, wind-bucking 77 grainers and my long range accuracy improved greatly.  My little 18" SPR will outperform my big heavy varminter any day of the week.  No, it doesn't produce spectacular kills from super high velocity bullets, but it more accurate at long ranges, and that's what counts for me.

I'd say build yourself an 18" or 20" SPR type rifle, and be sure to get the faster twist rifling for those accurate 77 grainers.

My second try;

Good luck and be sure to post those pics!

Thanks for the replies. Nice photos as well. Yes, im trying to watch how much I spend on the build. I was really hoping I could keep the barrel and use it, hopefully it will be accurate enough. However, going to an 18" 1/7 has crossed my mind. Thanks again, keep the ideas coming.

I would try to keep the barrel.  If you decide to replace the barrel, you may want to pop for a new upper (about $100) and then you would have whole upper.  Beware though.  Things like that lead to more AR's.  I had an A2 receiver, carbine handguards, delta ring and A2 stock that are now almost another rifle.  I just need a bolt carrier group and charging handle.  has
