Got the wife a L.W  DPMS CAR 15 (whatever they call them).

Had to crank the front sight post up to get the rifle zeroed. The post "flange" is about .040 above the base of the FSB.

Ahhhhh.  There is no "F" stamp mark on the FSB  and when the FSB is compared to my PTAC  CAR 15 with a "F" stamp") FSB the DPMS FSB is.... .040 shorter!

We've had the DPMS rifle for several months (bought new) so I dont know if DPMS would be willing to "fix it"  I have no idea why a 16" barrel would have a "standard" FSB on it.

Anyways. I know I could purchase a .040 taller sight but I dont like the idea of having the post stick out nearly above the FSB "ears".

What I'ld like to know is it possible for me to change out the FSB with the "correct" one? I know the taper pins are a issue.

Thoughts?

An "F" FSB comes from the same steel forging as a standard FSB the only difference being the shelf on the "F" FSB is milled .040 higher than on a standard FSB and of course the "F" stamp on the left side of the gas tube housing.

because of the higher shelf the protective ears are actually shorter on an "F" FSB.

The FSB's are drilled to the barrel. The chance of getting another FSB to fit your barrel like it's original FSB are slim to none. So unless your really darn good with a drill press your best bet is to either get DPMS to "fix it" or to send it to ADCO explaining you want a new "F" marked FSB drilled onto your existing barrel on your own dime... If your comfortable with the site post being as high as the ears then that is your easiest option...

The height of the tip of the FSP within the ears would be at the same height whether he used a taller FSP in a standard FSB or a standard FSP in a "F" FSB.

The difference is in the height of the shelf.

I believe there's a front sight post that works with A1 front sight bases with an A3 flat top upper.  Here:
