Hello,
I want to start off by saying that I am not new to the AR platform (bet you've never read THAT before on these forums) and am not a super n00b to shooting. I have built 3 ARs in 556 and now im starting to get an itch in the way of the .308 variant, but I am undecided. I know I want the rifle to utilize a 14.5" and I spec'd a build with Armalite parts (I avoid DPMS like the plague due to bad experience on my wife's AR which was my first ar15) and COMPLETE it is coming in at around the 3000 dollar mark, just shy. Now, with that being said, and noting that is complete, I am running into a few dilemmas:
1. Range. I do not plan to be shooting this rifle for groups at 600 yards, and I plan on making it a SHTF rifle with some more ass than a 5.56. So is it a waste to use an unmagnified optic on it?? I was thinking of a comp m4 or moving to a variable power optic like a 1-6x,
2. build vs. Buy choice: Should I just save the pennies for a while and buy a POF .308 and stick some glass on it and be done or suck it up and build it the way I want and risk running into problems since I am not familiar with this platform.
3. SCAR: For the kind of money that I am going to be investing into this puppy, should I just forget the AR platform all together and go for the SCAR 17? So far to me, I suppose the only thing that a scar brings to the table is a pissing contest winner at the range. Although that is a contest I wouldnt mind being on the winning side of..... even though I hate to admit it.
Please, all those who have an educated opinion, please shed some light on my situation. I keep arguing with myself about what to do, and frankly, I need some logic backup

NOTE: I posted this also in the variant section due to it being of that subject matter..... but its also a build concern... :(

Well,

First off I'd ask what is your intended use?

Then, why a .308?

Lastly, what's the budget...

Myself, I went different than I have in the past...

Long story, but house fire got my guns!

So, this time I standardized on cal...

I stock for shtf only 5.56, 12g, and .40s&w...

I do have afew hinting rifles in 30-06 and 30 30...but don't stock huge amount of rounds...or many weapons on that caliber either...

A .308 is a decent round, and it is available in the at platform...my deal with it is confusuions...

Ex. In shtf, all my mags/ammo is 5.56...easy, grab and go, it will work if it will fit...hard to put 12g into an ar...

I prefer the kiss method...so I standardized on 5.56 due to availability and cost to stock rounds...

Now, back to .308, of it was me, I'd go with a different platform to keep the ability/ease of putting in the wrong mag under pressure...

So bottom line...on shtf gun...

Stick with the most available round at the best price for stocking...that's 5.56... Many ak...but I dont like ak's...

At under 200m I'd say it's a wash...it's all about lead on target...

The 5.56 is a smaller round, but due to light recoil it's easier to follow up...that's the key IMHO...

No one will fall with one shot, unless you hit the cns...and it you hit that with 5.56 vs 7.62 it makes no never mind IMHO...

So, as for ar platform....

Only advantage is feel, familiarity...but disadvantages are much worse...

You now have a issue with sharing mags, and parts that may look identical at first and won't work correct...

You have a weapon that looks like an at/m4 but uses .308... Under stress. It a great idea...and shtf is a stressful situation...

So, my advice is to go with a different platform...will help mitigate the confusion in shtf scenario...

I don't care if your a seasoned vet, or a noob, ease of identification is key in a stressful situation....

Bottom line...two things to think about...

One: Do you need this calibre in a shtf scenario...?
Two: if you do what means do you have to keep cross calibre contimation at bay?

My conclusion was to not introduce another round...and stay with the 5.56...however I have long range 30-06 and even 7mm rem. mag...but these guns are available but not built for a shtf type of scenario....

So shtf is down to 3 rounds to stock...5.56, 12g, and .40s&w....

My two cents!

I guess I would ask what distance you want to shoot. You said you were not wanting to group at 600 yards. I like the 300 AAC blackout for a SHTF gun 308 caliber bullet but you loose range.

This........ is the type of response I am looking for....
My wife and I have moved into the same realm of stocking standardized ammunition. 5.56/ ,223, 12 ga., and I actually got rid of a .40 SW to get a 9mm for that reason.
That being said we have a bit of .308 on the shelf for a bolt action that she has and that is the main reason I was considering it.
I just finished up my intended SHTF rifle in 5.56 and intend to use it for training for the event that hopefully will never happen.
I understand and appreciate the aspect of having a similar looking rifle that is in a diff caliber and the confusion of grabbing one with the intent of grabbing the other. I guess I was only intending to stick to the AR platform because I know and understand how it operates.
the distances I think that I may be subjected to due to my surroundings would keep me in the 200 -400 m range and at 400 m around here, its not difficult to find cover. the mountains of WV are a beautiful, useful thing, and I feel at home in them.
I do appreciate your feedback. especially since I have been tossing this around for a couple of months. But it sounds like I'm on the right track with other things (standardizing ammo/ parts, etc)
I too am not an AK fan.... not sure what it is, but im not...
Take care and thanks for the feedback.
