I have a factory original Colt M4. I want to replace the stock, but cannot loosen the buffer tube retaining ring. I have the special wrench, but the darn thing won't budge. Any suggestions before I give up and take it to the gunsmith?

Do you have the appropriate specialized wrench?

IIRC, the lock ring on a true Colt M4 buffer tube may be staked in place as well.

If thats the case, can it be removed short of a trip to a gunsmith?

I recomend using a strap wrench on the buffer tube to counteract stress on the reciever. If it is staked you will have to exert alot of torque to get it started and the retainer nut is usually no longer round after staking. if you want to reuse the buffer tube use caution on the threads. channel locks and a leather strap applied appropriately will sometimes relieve the pressure of not roundness left by staking.

In the service the armorer would simply grind the lock ring to free it from being staked and use new parts when reassembling, thats why a little blue locktite holds it on good, just have to heat it a little to remove it easily. So I say grind it and turn it off.
