I need to get a cheap scope and mount for my sons AR. It will be used for learning, hunting, plinking and target shooting. Nothing serious or competitive.

I have narrowed the field down to the following choices.

Primary Arms 1-4x24 with Burris PEPR mount
or
Bushnall Trophy 1-4x 24 or 1.5-6x42 with SWFA SSALT mount

Which would be the better choice?

I dont have any experience with the scopes you mentioned.

I hve two Bushnell Elite 3200's.  A 10x fixed scope and a 1.5x4.5x32.  Both are good scopes.

The 10x is an exceptional value.  The 1.5x4.5x42 is turning out to be a good scope for Practical Rifle matches in spite of it's humble origins.

I have no experience with the Primary scope.

I'd try to go a step up from the Trophy if the budget allows.  Maybe to the Elite 3200 line.

The Nikon Buckmaster line is very good.  I have two of them  A fixed four power and a 4.5x14x40 SF scope that is superb.

All of the scopes I mentioned are mounted save the Nikon 4x40 fixed power scope.

Let me know and I'll post pics of the various scopes and mounts.

Before you buy a mount, compare mounts here.

I'm fond of the Armalite mount, its a good mount. in its price ramge

Check out the Sample List, you might find something here you like at a reduced price.

IMO when buying 'cheap' optics, you get far less than you pay for. Given a choice, I'd go with the Bushnell, as I have never even heard of the other scope.

Thanx for the info guys.

Like you most my previous research has been on the good stuff for LEO work and Home defense. I am locked on there.

But when it came to choosing something less expensive and low budget I found myself clueless.

Yes I have seen that Weaver. It gets great reviews.

But I wanted something with a bit more magnification range. What advantages does it offer over the others.

The weaver is shorter, lighter, better glass, very tough. Love my weaver. I have it in the Pepr mount as well and it works great. Weight and size were a big issue for me as the pepr isn't a light mount to begin with, add a heavy long scope and it may be too much for you.
