I have spent all my time in handguns, shotguns, and hunting rifles. I want to get an AR-15. This will be a range rifle/home defense in addition to the tactical 870, so I am looking at a 16" carbine.

I am trying to decide on .223 vs .308. My thoughts are that the .223 is the obvious choice, but the .308 would get the nod for flexibility and the abilty to hunt with hit.

I have looked at the Bushmaster as well as the DPMS Panther line. Are ARs similiar to pistols where you have to find out which one fits your hand or are they pretty similiar? What others should I consider? Thanks

Taking into account you initially stated you wanted it as a range/defence rifle I would recommend a Colt 6920 which would give you a 5.56/.223 rifle in 16" that you could essential run the rest of your life!

Having fallen into the same trap in several hobbies, I'd recommend going all out on something you know you can trust your life on in lieu of easing in.  That and the value of the 6920 will hold much better than most, if not all other rifles.

The beautiful thing about the AR platform is that if something doesn't fit you right, you pop it off and try a different part.

I went through three pistol grips before I found one that fit my hand and was comfortable to me.

Buy a Colt 6920. Shoot the piss out of it. Ten thousand rounds from now you will know what you like in a rifle.
