My rifle started out as a Bushy, 16'' carbine HBAR.  I just put a Spike's bolt carrier and trigger group in, the nickle plated ones, and a H2 buffer.  I kept it a little more dry than I typically would because of the nickle plating, which I'm thinking might be the issue.  About one in 20 rounds would fail to fire.  The bolt carrier would be full forward and locked, the hammer would fall, but it would not fire.  After ejecting the round, it only had the typical dimple from the floating firing pin, it obviously wasn't struck.  I had about 5 failure to fires the whole day, and I saved them for the end.  After I was done shooting, I put those rounds through it and all but one of them fired off normally.  The one in particular, failed to fire 5 times total.

I was shooting Lake City Federal .223, and my buddy lent me 20 rounds of his American Eagle .223.  4 of the rounds were from the LC, one was from the AE, so they both gave me problems, but I don't think it was the ammo because they are both GTG, aren't they?  His rifle (freshly built Frankenngun, first time shooting it today) ate up the AE just fine.  Perhaps I should try soaking it before shooting next time?

BCG?  I'll assume the bushmaster one was an AR15 (semi-auto) type. Is the Spike unit full or semi auto?
Buffer weight? Can you go back to a standard carbine buffer? if so change this back and try it again.
Springs? Are your hammer and trigger springs in right?

It's a semi-auto BCG from Spikes, the previous was also semi-auto.  It's a heavy buffer, haven't tried the old one with the new BCG yet.  Everything is installed properly, I triple-checked everything.  I can't see that it was the buffer, but next weekend I will try again and bring all my spare parts.

Then your BCG weight is the same. No problems there.
Was there a performance issue that made you change to the H2 buffer?  The gun ran fine without it?

Pull your BCG and check for any damage on the firing pin and ensure that the retaining pin is there.

Do you have access to a firing pin protrusion gauge and head space gauges?

You might try putting your old firing pin in your spikes BCG. If that doesn't make a difference try your old bolt in your Spikes carrier. If still no change try putting your old buffer in. This should identify which if any of the new components are the cause of your malfunction.

Sounds like a backwards hammer spring.

You fixed you perfectly good rifle and now it doesnt work right.

I do not have either of these.  But I will try my old firing pin and see how it compares.  There is no damage to anything.  There was also no performance issues with the old buffer, I just wanted to slow down the cycle to make it a bit easier on things, but I can try the old buffer next weekend.

That's what he did but I did not want the thread to go that way..... let's help him get his wepon back in the fight!

I'd go with what I asked earlier about all the springs being in right. If you get a chance take the FCG (fire control group) parts back out and try it again. You may have missed something.  {I build guns for a living and I see stuff that gets missed by folks that have been doing it for a long time.}

Well, the new firing pin fights very snug in the new bolt.  Could that cause it perhaps?  In order for me to get it to protrude through the end of the bolt, I need to use pressure, while the old firing pin drops right in both bolts.  I think the new firing pin may be warped, if I twist it, it gets tighter in some areas.

Yep, I just verified it again.  It does look like I installed the hammer spring backwards.  I will fix this now and check it again next weekend.

Good job.   The wrong way springs will get you everytime!
also; use the older firing pin but take the new one with you to the range. You can swap between them and see if there are any issues.

Where do you shoot?

That's the one, I'll be sure to PM you, it'll probably be next weekend to be sure these issues are solved.  Thanks to you and everyone else for your help!
