First post, so bear with me!
I have a 24" RRA Varmint rifle and am wanting to put a mid-range scope on it. I'm looking at reaching out to 300 yds or so for target shooting and small game hunting. The other issue is that I also have a tactical upper and would like to use the same scope set-up for it as well. I'm thinking that the best option would be an EOTech with and Aimpoint for Magnification and distance but wanted to consult the AR Gods before making any decisions. The only issue I have witht the EOTech/Aimpoint setup is that it's going to set me back quite a bit and right now money is kind of tight. If anybody has any other ideas I'm all ears. Thanks. |

If money is tight and you want a scope that works for both uppers, the popular Millett DMS-1 is hard to beat for the money. It's great for close range, and the 4x will let you get a ways out, though 300 yards would be stretching it for me. They hold their value pretty well, and you can always sell it off when you afford to upgrade.
If you want to focus more on longer range, a 3-9x or so is good for a general purpose scope, and one with mildots or another ranging reticle would be useful for the longer range shooting. There are lots of them out there that will do the trick - Leupold, Burris, Nikon, etc. You lose a lot of short range flexibility starting at 3 or 4x, though. I'd avoid fixed-mag scopes - while they're fine choices for many applications, you don't have that much flexibility with them. For less than the Eotech and Aimpoint, you could get the DMS-1 for short-range use, and for really reaching out, you can get this Nikon Buckmaster 6-18x mildot for $300 on sale: http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=123107 or this Buckmaster 4.5-14x mildot for $290: http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=760482 They're not combat-grade optics, but are good scopes for the money, and will hold their value well. |
