I'm relatively new to the AR world. I'm 55 and have been shooting and hunting since I was 8. I've owned two AR's: the first one was a Colt A4 (I think) that I bought during the klinton years. I sold it without firing a shot. Last year I took the plunge and purchased an LWRC REPR w/20" barrel. It was quite expensive, but that's how I do things - over extend myself before I''m sure of the gun I'm buying. This turned out to be a great buy. The REPR is a very nice firearm.
Down to my subject line - I need advice. My daughter loves to shoot. She's 20, and I've had her pulling a trigger since she was 5 (Chipmunk single shot .22). She's quite the marksman. All of my instruction, her practice and her natural ability have paid off. I bought her a Glock 17 for Christmas which that she just about did cartwheels over. Even with the stock trigger she's ringing steel with boring regularity. She has fallen in love with my REPR, or rather, the AR-15 platform. Well, I can't shell out another $4K, and besides the .308 is really too heavy for her. I want to get her a reasonably priced AR-15 that looks every bit the deadly black rifle that it is. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. |

Go with a Lightweight profile barrel upper receiver group and buy a lower receiver group separately

If she is that into it I suggest telling her you want to build one with her. Good bonding time, and she can pick whatever she likes for parts, especially if she's girly and wants to have her black rifle also have pink or whatever. You can build a damn decent piece for well under a grand, and go with higher-end parts for around that mark.
As far as building goes if you can tune your car up you can build an AR. It really is that easy. Take a look at Brownells AR15 build videos. They are nice short pieces that get you set up, then take you through each part until you have a complete gun. They break the process down into each subunit, and each video is typically less than 3 min long. The real genius in Stoner's design is just how stupid easy cobbling one together really is. |

I just built my first AR for $700 and my brother bought a stock M&P Sport for about the same and we both love each of ours.
FYI building my own and shooting it without anything breaking was kind of awesome so maybe she would like building her own? So much information out there that makes it so easy to do. I've been reading up on AR's for about two months and I built mine in about two hours, and I'm sure she'd probably beat that! |
