So I've probably spent 4 hours today looking at threads and reading up on optics.... and I need some help I'm starting to feel sick from looking at the stupid screen. Its happened a lot recently as I'm new to AR's and have a bad case of BRD.
Anyways, here's my problem (tell me if I should put a poll up) Like I said I'm new to AR's, so I'm getting more and more used to handing over huge amounts of money. My AR is now set up with everything I could want minus a good CQB optic. I want to buy once and never have to worry again, I want to be able to take it to carbine courses and not have to worry about it getting beat up. I'm also trying to prepare myself for entering the law enforcement field. I'm not that die hard shooter (but I hope to be in the future) so I don't know if I need the absolute best, but I would like it. That being said What optic would you recommend? Vortex Strikefire - Cheap, lifetime no question warranty. Good reviews. Minimal parallax error? Dependability? I'm sure it'll suit my needs now, but will it always? Should i just get it and upgrade later (if need be?) Aimpoint CompML2, 4 MOA - Cheaper then the ML3, but I want a 2MOA dot. Still is it that big of a difference? Aimpoint Comp ML3, 2 MOA - More expensive.. would you take this over an EOtech? EOTech XPS2-2 Transverse 65MOA Ring/2-1MOA Dots - Don't wanna open a can of worms, but personally would you take an aimpoint or eotech? Aimpoint Micro H-1, 4 MOA - Most expensive, would you take this or the ML3? Do I need a poll? Again I just don't know I could go with any for a number of reasons |

ML2 in an ADM, Bobro or LT mount if you're on a budget...might find one used in the EE...H1 if you're not as budget-oriented... I reviewed the Vortex a while back and it was not bright enough for my use...also tended to shut itself off...If those issues were addressed it would be a good option... Have not seen the new XPS and try not to pass judgment on things that I don't have hands on experience with. I don't get the 2/4MOA argument, they all look the same to me...if you want a smaller dot, turn down the brightness... |

Eotechs: I prefer the circle-dot reticle over a simple dot as I find the reticle faster to acquire when shooting from unconventional positions. However, some of the older Eotechs have suffered from a variety of problems, most dealing w/leaking batteries (use lithiums only to avoid this), draining batteries when turned off (a by-product of using an electronic switch instead of a mechanical switch), relatively poor battery life, possibility of battery spring compression over time (which causes the unit to switch off when the rifle is fired) and the occasional "it turns off and stays off until you remove the batteries for 24hrs" problem). The new XPS looks to solve a number of the previous Eotech reliability problems if you don't mind the CR123 batteries.
Aimpoints: Combat-proven, extremely rugged/reliable w/insane battery life ('nuff said). I prefer the 30mm Aimpoints (M-series) to the 20mm Micros as the larger FOV through the 30mm Aimpoints makes finding the dot faster/easier when shooting from unconventional positions. The CompC3 is probably the best value for an Aimpoint, SWFA has a $399 package deal which includes mount, flip-ups & rubber armor. The CompM4 is my fav Aimpoint since it's arguably the most rugged Aimpoint, comes w/a decent QD mount w/riser and uses a single AA battery (like the rest of my kit so battery logistics are simplified for me, YMMV). HTH... Tomac |

Thanks everyone
Ftl - I've narrowed down my choices off some of the aimpoints. I thought they came with at least some mount 87GN - saw your review! It made me somewhat doubtful and if I have the money to get a C3 or ML2 why not? Thanks for the input! Tomac - that deal is a huge find for me.. I'm starting to lean towards that |
