| So I'm starting to build my dream/go to rifle and need some suggestions. So for now I'm going with a 16" barrel and was wondering if I should go with a 6.5 Grendel or stick with .223. I will SBR it later on and put a suppressor on it. I have a suppressor for a 223 already and I will hope to get a silencerco 762 anyway. So is it worth it to go 6.5? I've wanted one for a while and think it would be cool. If I should stay .223 what ammo should I get for a SBR? This rifle will be an all around do everything in 500 yards for shtf. I would like some input on barrels, bcg, and anything that could make this gun more reliable. I plan on going with a side charging upper. |

Quoted:
If I was going the suppressed SBR route, I'd go 300 Black Out before 6.5 Grendel. I'm will build a 300 BLK upper as well, but this one is more for up to 500 yards. I really don't want to deal with 300 BLK put to 500 yards. I know it can be done, but supersonic 6.5 Grendel just beats supersonic 300 BLK. I want to build a 10.3" 300 BLK later on, especially when I start reloading. |
| I say 5.56 with 14.5. Should be able to attain 500+ with good ammo. Get a 6.5 upper later on to push your rifle capability even further. And to each their own but I owned a 10.3 upper and opted for 14.5 after the fact, just my preference. Thought 10.3 ar was going to be my go to rifle and just couldn't get happy enough with it and sold for a 14.5 and now know that's my preferred length upper. Just letting you know fwiw. |
| Favorite for some. I thought it was going to be mine. I had a 16 and 20 inch 5.56 ar when I went with the 10.3, ended but selling that and doing a free float 14.5. Much preferred to ME. I also sold my 16 still attempting to fund a 6.5 upper to swap back and forth with my 14.5 or 20... |

5.56mm is by far my favorite round for an AR-15. I own 7.62x39mm, 6.5 Grendel, 6.8SPC and 6mmWOA AR-15's and none of them have the reliability or better accuracy than my 5.56mm.
The major weakness of the larger calibers is poor quality magazines, weakened bolts, more expensive brass and mandatory tweaking to get them to run most of the time. 5.56mm is dead accurate and dead reliable. Spending your money on reloading equipment and premium (Sierra Match King) bullets is always the easiest way to get the most out of 5.56mm. You'll have to reload anyway if you want to shoot 6.5 or 6.8 very often. Build or buy a premium SPR style upper with a quality stainless steel barrel in 5.56mm and prepare to be impressed. I have three space guns (1 - 5.56mm and 2 - 6mmWOA) side charging uppers from White Oak Armament. While they are very good for NRA across the course tournaments, I would never use one for self-defense or combat style courses of fire. Their bolt handles reciprocate upon firing, not something you want on a rifle you are betting your life on. Standard uppers work best for self-defense. |
