I just bought a S&W M&p 15 sport for $550 out the door. I was going to make my second AR a full ground up build but I figure I would have as much fun tearing this apart to learn it as I would building another. I am going to start with a new trigger and next will be a stripped upper I think. I plan on slowly changing everything on this rifle until I completely replace it. I know it sounds strange but at least it will give me a project that MAY prevent me from going and buying another AR next week. These things are like crack, and when it comes to toys I can be rather weak willed. And thanks to all of you I know I'm not the only one.

Any recomendations on a stripped upper and a trigger.

Mind me asking whats wrong with the upper that's on it now?

Nothing is really wrong with it. It would be nice to have an ejection port door and a forward assist. Not a big deal really but I have a habit of wanting to replace parts with better parts, I have done this so many times with my computer that I have used the old parts to build a couple whole computers.

Uppers

Make sure your upper matches the feedramps on your barrel.

And there is the reason I posted before I went out and bought. As you can tell I am still a noob and would have had no clue to pay attention to feed ramps. Thank you, you most likely just saved me some money.

You could probably trade someone for your upper.  A lot of people are looking for those uppers without the F/A to save weight.  I would keep it, personally.  I would buy 4 cases of the cheapest ammo I could find an shoot the shit out of that gun.  $550 otd?  Good deal.

My main AR has an Osprey 416 drop in on it so im making and identical DI upper both using Colt socom barrels.I figured I could switch out uppers on 1 lower...well now im searching for a pre-ban lower..live in a ban state so I can have a seperate rifle which will make #6..it started out as an upper and now its turning into another complete rifle..it would have been way more expensive for me if I didnt have 4 pre-bans to begin with.I guess what im saying is buy another AR sell off the old upper from rifle 1 and build a new upper for rifle 1

I recommend a stripped upper from Fail Zero.

Its the only stripped upper on the market that has a functional upgrade in my opinion.

$124 stripped w/o charging handle.  $10 more for black,OD, or FDE.

I am going to assume some of you have used Fail zero parts and they must have lived up to their advertisement. If so I think that is the route I'll go.

So I got to work today and told my boss that I plan on buying the Fail zero upper and BCG, he told me if I will install one on his gun he will buy his and mine. I don't always like him for how lazy he is but if it continues to work like this he can continue to be lazy. Wish me luck, this is going to be my first tear down on an AR, going to do mine first then his. Figure if he is going to be that generous I might have an idea of what I am doing by the time I get to his...

just keep in mind...

EXO coating is a different color than regular uppers...

it will look like this - (the upper... the lower is clear anodize)

If you want it in black or FDE or OD... the color is a ceramic topcoat.  And it might not match your lower perfectly unless you play around with refinishing it...

here is my OD upper with a OD Gunkoted lower and rail - (the color match is NOT perfect)

I don;t know if matching finishes mattters to you.. but i figured you should know about it before dropping the coin on it.... for me the functionality of it WAY outweighs any cosmetic issues... and honestly.. i like my color setups

I have no experience with the black or FDE topcoats.. don't know what they are like.. but the OD is kinda matte.

I second. I recently replaced the A2 upper on my Colt 6520 with the fail zero extreme duty kit, upper, bolt carrier group and hammer.
