Hi i am wondering if I can get help from people that know the DPMS AR.308 I took my Aero M5 to the range for the first maiden voyage , the build is an Aero M5 Lower and aero 16” upper with an Aero adjustable gas block I installed an A5 buffer tube and a Tubbs Flatwire spring, and an Ar15 Carbine H3 Buffer at 5.4oz When I got to the range I got the rifle to run reliably pretty quickly However the adjustable gas block opens at a max of 15 clicks from closed I needed to open the gas block too 11 clicks almost all the way Is this good? Or should i go lighter ? Spring buffer? |

I have several builds like yours and they all run 100% using Aero's standard A5 carbine buffer and spring. Keep in mind... the limiting factor for gas is the barrel's gas port, not how many "clicks" the adjustable gas block is open. With the gas block all the way open the rifle's only going to get what the gas port in the barrel allows. Seeing as some Aero/BA barrels tend to be over gassed slightly, seems appropriate that you're running good on an almost fully opened gas block. ETA- you need to put the shorter .308 M5 buffer in the rifle, not the AR15 carbine buffer. |

Shorter .308 A5 buffer? And you also said that you have several builds using Aeros Standard A5 buffer? The A5 Buffer tube is Deeper than the Standard Carbine buffer tube that Aero includes in there M5 Rifle (If it’s a model including a collapsing stock) They are using the same old DPMS pattern 7” (AR15) Carbine buffer tube…Then that Shorty (Stubby Buffer?…is simply an AR15 Carbine buffer that is Cut down shorter to allow that Longer .308 BCG to have enough room in that shallow AR15 Buffer tube..as it’s made for an AR15 BCG witch is shorter The A5 Buffer tube, is a special design longer carbine buffer tube, designed to work with a special longer A5 Carbine buffer.It is longer than an AR15 Carbine buffer but shorter than a rifle buffer. It was found that this A5 Buffer tube was about the same length as the origional AR10 buffer tube , and the AR10 used this buffer tube witch is 7 5/8” deep instead of the typical AR15 buffer tube used in the Aero M5 or DPMS pattern rifle witch is 7” With this setup the aero m5 is getting the recoil system of the actual AR10 And not a Shortend AR15 Carbine buffer and carbine buffer tube witch was never intended for the AR.308 or AR10 variant I just want to make sure we are talking about the same thing |

Yes that’s how it’s done, in the AR.308 world The A5 Buffer tube is the same length as the carbine buffer tube that the real AR10 used, then a regular standard Buffer was used witch was basically an AR15 H3 Carbine buffer and an AR10 Rifle spring The Aero M5 designed from the DPMS pattern rifle, used a regular 7” AR15 carbine buffer tube..But then took an AR15 carbine buffer..cut it down to make it shorter..since the AR.308 BCG is longer than the ar15 BCG,The .308 BCG would never fit depth wise in that short 7” tube unless they cut the ar15 buffer down They then made a AR.308 carbine spring for it… The issue with this is that they are modding an complete ar15 recoil system to work in an big bore If you look at some ar15 carbine buffer tubes for sale , you will notice that they say that they work for .308 as well.. Using the system that I did…you give that large bolt more dwell time, room to breath and reciprocate naturally This beast shoots smoother than my AK47 |

DO NOT use A5 buffers with an A5 tube. When using an A5 tube in a large frame, you MUST use standard-length AR15 buffers. |

Or should i go lighter ? Spring buffer? Riflespeed adjustable gas block, A5 style tube, h3 carbine buffer and a Sprinco green worked wonders for me for 16" barrel and 18". Red Sprinco also worked with the 18". A Superlative gas block didn't work for me. I run suppressed now as well. |

For the OP, I would consider myself lucky if your barrel is slightly under gassed. Most LFAR barrels tend to be "overgassed". Your setup is GTG as is. ( correct buffer length ) Bowhntr6pt, may have inadvertently, momentarily been mistaken.. ( we all have done it, LFAR's can be so danged flummoxed )... he is quite knowledgeable on the LFAR's . |
