I thought I had read this somewhere, but can't find it now.  I got a new AR, and am going out to the range tomorrow.  Is there any recommended procedures to keep note of when breaking in the barrel?

Thanks!

Search for barrel lapping and make the decision yourself.

A lot of people will say shoot the shit out of your barrel and it'll be ok. To me that's like saying, "When buying a new car, drive the shit out of it the first 500 miles."

Chrome lined barrels require no break in other than firing 200 rounds and cleaning.

Hand lapped stainless match barrels require no break in other than firing 200 rounds and cleaning.

You may see some limited benefit from breaking in a non lapped stainless barrel of questionable quality.

New cars require no break in either.  Modern machining tolerances dont require a break in like older cars.  When testing random samples of new Corvettes off the line they run the dog shit out of them right away with no issues.  If your new Corevtte is delivered with more than about 12 miles on it it has had the dog shit run out of it at the factory.

Barrel break in is a scam invented by barrel manufacturers according to Gale McMillan.

Sweet!  Sounds like I can just relax tomorrow and enjoy my day at the range.  Here's some pics of the rifle.  I ended up taking back the EoTech.  Going to concentrate on using the irons and eventually get a ranged scope of somesort.

You should have given the EOTech. a try it's a really great sighting system I have one and also and ACOG and both are quick and right on target.

I thought about keeping it, but I really don't see the need right now.  My main reason for having the AR is for ranged shots between 100-300 yards, but first I need to work up on the fundamentals of shooting a rifle.
