Hi guys, I am in the market for a new out of the box AR in 223/5.56. I have roughly $1200 (800 of which is grift cards to Gander Mount) max I can use for this purchase not including ammo and such. So what are your thoughts and suggestion? Thanks in advance

Gander Mountain prices are pretty high in comparison to other places I have bought guns/parts/equipment from.  But if you have to use the gift cards there and cannot get money refunded for them, I'm sure you will be able to pick up a more than adequate rifle for $1,200.  I'm not sure what kind of inventory they stock as I never went back into their store after I saw their prices.

Good luck...you should get some responses shortly.

ETA: I checked their online catalog and DAMN...their prices are high.  I'd probably do this one and have $$$ left for ammo and spare mags: http://www.gandermountain.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?pdesc=Del-ton-DT-Sport-Centerfire-Rifle&i=721345

I can build that one for  500, using a DT parts kit.

If I was in your shoes, I would build my own rifle with the 400 and add a little of my own money. take the 800 in gift cards and buy a safe on sale, a nice pair of boots, some fishing gear and pick up something for my wife.

10% OFF with Code: NEWYEAR

Gander Mountain prices are ridiculously high, easily 30%-40%+ higher than market price.
e.g.
GM's Bushmaster A3 Patrolman Carbine $1299 before coupon
http://www.gandermountain.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?pdesc=Bushmaster-A3-Patrolmans-Carbine-Centerfire-Rifle&i=722019

Same gun at CDNN $699.99

If you can get 80% of their value, I'd sell the gift cards. There are tons of rifles at your price point, but you'll get more value for money somewhere else.

If your budget includes optics, I'd get a PSA premium M4 around $500-600, and get a used ACOG around $600.

Building one is definitely the way to go (I build all my AR's now)...but I was trying to stay within the OP's parameters.  If he feels he HAS to use his gift cards at Gander Mountain in order to buy his rifle, I was just giving him a decent option for that (and believe me, there wasn't very many decent options with GM's prices).

Yeah guys I am kind of stuck here. I might look into selling them as I have purchased small arms in the past and noticed Ganders markup percentage is atrocious. Thanks guys.

Years back I was about to to the same thing. Fortunately I mentioned it to a buddy at work who is an AR guru. He steered me into building one with mostly Spikes hardware. I now have better furniture, triggers and groups for the same or better price than an off the shelf GM gun. In hiindsight, it am much happier and have much higher quality rifles at a lower cost than buying a Del-ton off the shelf. Years later, Ive now caught the bug and may need an intervention......or an addition to store safes and reloading equipment. .....or a divorce

Sell your gift cards to one of the online sites and shop somewhere with better prices.  Bud's has the same Del-ton sport that Gander wants $800 for, Bud's sells it for $550.

I go to Gander Mountain for some good laughs, their prices make me lol.

If you don't want to build go buy a Colt 6720 or 6920.

OP...do you have any aversion to building your own? If you can read any type of instruction manual and have even mediocre dexterity you can build your own AR. You will also benefit from the satisfaction of "I built it" and will know the gun inside and out.....there is a lot to be said for that.

go with a BCM or colt if possible, both are good quality weapons.

With your situation, I would try to see if gander would price match before you ditch the gift cards.

Does Gander Mtn sell ammo?  If so, just wait for a decent sale and stock up.

I thought Gander Mountain was just a place where you went to look and fondle guns that you couldn't find anywhere else, I didn't know they actually sold guns.

Most online places are willing to give $592 for an $800 card.

you are probably better off making a deal at Gander mountain.  See that store manager and let him know what you are doing and why. He will appreciate the feedback.

Negotiating is definitely worth the try...especially at the prices Gander Mountain asks.  They have to know that the guns they are selling are priced higher than just about anyone in the country.  They probably EXPECT a prospective buyer to negotiate.  If not, and they do not knock some off of their price...then shame, SHAME on them.

Wow, I took a gander at Gander's prices and I only can think of two words: RIP OFF!

By the way, cashing in the cards and losing over $200 looks the same as buying $200 over retail.

As mentioned use the cards for other purchases and use the cash to build one or buy one elsewhere.
