Hi,

So I just got a new Daniel Defense AR Upper and when I was looking at it for the first time (after receiving it) I saw there is a scratch/unfinished part of the gun:

The scracth/unfinished part being that silver line on the deflector.

Now the scratch itself does not bother me too much, I will probably scratch this thing up good enough on my own.

My question is having that small piece of surface there that is "unfinished" is that bad for the gun in anyway, ie rust, damage to the finish, etc that will get worse over time?

Just want to know if I need to figure out sending it back or not.

Thanks.

It's aluminum, it won't rust.

Solution- just shoot it

Everything is normal, that mark/worn area is from the brass hitting the deflector from firing.  My guess is DD test fired it before shipping.  No cause for concern about the exposed metal.

You'll probably mark it up more than that on your first range trip. If you want to send it back because of that you should probably get out of the black rifle game. My suggestion would be to go out and run the shit out of it. The deflector will get marked up more than that quickly. Or you can put a piece if velcro on the deflector so you can keep it pretty.

And that "scratch" happens when shells hit the shell deflector. Supposed to be that way.

You can bet that the deflector will see more scratches as you run multiple mags through it.

You're fine.

a sharpie marker will make that less silver

Can't quite tell from the photo , if it is brass colored (slightly yellow ) it will polish off but the next few shots will mark it up again , so just shoot it .

If it is actually a scratch through the anodize coat (showing a silver color) it is aluminum and won't rust , just shoot it or to make it look a bit better cover it with a sharpie permanent marker.

Short answer , go shoot it!

It's the deflector...it's going to get a whole lot more "scratched up" through use.

In fact, the "scratch" could be from being test fired at the factory.

I't Aluminum, it won't rust.

Normally I'm the first guy to say send it back. Especially when you drop alot of coin for a DD. BUT, that blemish is so minute, and in a location that sees alot of abuse anyway, hit it with a Sharpie and move on. Like others have said, you won't have to deal with corrosion so don't worry about that.

Throw it down the driveway until the mark is less obvious.

A Chopsaw would make it less obvious too.

Since you sound like me and appreciate keeping your rifles in good shape, try this trick.   Go to Home Depot or similar store and get some Industrial Strength Velcro with the adhesive on the back of it.

Take the soft side of the Velcro pair (the loop side) and cut a piece to size to cover the shell deflector.   Clean the deflector with a alcohol pad to remove any dirt or grease, and stick on the piece you cut out.   Let it sit overnight and then go an shoot it.  You will never get any finish damage from now on on the deflector, and it looks a lot better since it doesn't show wear for thousands and thousands of wear.   Once it is old and beat up after years of shooting, peel it off and put on a new piece.

I don't worry about my AR deflectors, but I bought an AUG years ago that had some sort of rubber/ized industrial tape stuck on the (plastic) stock where the ejected cases would impact.

I've never looked for it but it in a store so can't give you a brand but it basically rubber tape.

And Velcro would work, too!

Came here to post this. After flaking off spray paint, brass dings on the deflector look bad ass.
