welcome to the site. First give us a bit more info please. What length barrel are you using? What Ammo are you using? What type of muzzle device do you have on there? Where were you shooting? Longer barrels are a touch quieter. Some super duper ammo is extra loud. Muzzle breaks make ARs louder, especially the AK74 type breaks. Shooting at indoor ranges or near the cinder block walls at outdoor ranges can definitely make things seem even louder from reflected noise. |
| i dont know much about the gun.....it was my fathers who recently passed away now the ar-15 and a few other rifles are mine.....ill post a pic of it..mabe you guys can help out...i was shooting at an outdoor range open field....the ammo was winchester....56 i think |
I'm happy to give a bit more help. I would still like to know what type of barrel and muzzle device (if any) is being used, this can have a huge impact on how loud a given AR is. If you have pictures I may be able to help you identify some of the parts you have on the rifle. Also, the AR platform operates on a gas system known as direct impingement. This means some of the expanding gasses that force the bullet down the barrel are redirected through a gas tube back to the bolt, and into the action to cycle the rifle. Also the powders used are somewhat fast burning and high in pressure. The 5.56/.223 rounds are high pressure and high velocity rounds. Supersonic rounds are pretty loud. Barrel basics: Most common barrel lengths are 20" for rifles, 16" for carbines. carbines tend to be a bit louder because the extra powder that didn't burn in the barrel burns up after it leaves the muzzle. Some other common barrel lengths are 11.5" with permanently attached flash hiders, these are especially loud. As I stated before differnt muzle devices can make the rifle louder as well. to identify the type of muzzle device you have pictures would be best. |
For a start, you will prolly obtain more helpful answers to your interrogative if you simply advise barrel length, muzzle device type & what environment/surroundings are you shooting the AR in question? Get better ear pro, double up the ear pro or buy a suppressor if the sound is too obnoixous for you. I as well as other vets have hearing loss from combat use of firearms. That's not the case across the board with all combat vets, but hearing loss from folks that fall into that category exists nonetheless. |

Cant see the muzzle device but thats a 20" barrel and if its a flash hider it is the quietest cnfiguration you are likely to see. It is quieter than any .308 or 7mm hunting rifle too. Quieter than a 7.62x39 AK. You wont really find many, if any, semi auto rifles as quiet as yours. The rifle is probably a parts kit gun and not a complete rifle. Can you read any barrel markings? You need to pop off the handguards to see them. Also need a pic of the muzzle. |

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v259/mattyacks/bareeelll.jpg how do i take hand guard off |
| Looks like an A2 but might be an A2 styled brake. Can we see the front of the muzzle device? If it has a small hole its a brake and that is why its so loud... it is directing blast and noise back and up If it is large hole in the end its a flash hider and that is as quiet as you will get. |

its from double star corp..they hav a website.....posting pics......................... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v259/mattyacks/barrel2.jpg ok i relized its going to be loud no matter what...but is it possible to he smaller hand guards...like m4 style....i dont like the long style how it is now |
Take the brake off & replace it with a standard A2 FH. Brakes will make your rifle louder. To take the handguards off, you simply pull back hard on the D-ring & pull off the halves. You are limited to those length handguards due to having a full length rifle. You can buy rails, but they have to be same length. Buy a 16" carbine length upper & swap 'em out for a shorter length. |
