Currently have a stock Bushmaster 16" 1/9 Twist HBAR with about 10k through it. I am looking to put a competition barrel on it soon. Is it required or recommended to get a new bolt or BCG to go with the new barrel?

Yep, get a bolt...get 2 while you're at it so you'll have a spare.

Can I jump in here and ask...just the bolt, not the carrier?

I'd get a whole new BCG.

Then you'd have the start of a new build laying around.

I would save money and just get the bolt.  Who are you getting your barrel from?  Some of the higher end barrel manufacturers actually sell a matching bolt to go with the barrel.  That seems like the way to go if you want to get really serious about it.

Otherwise, Check out this Les Baer bolt.  You can get it with/without the extractor/sping/gas rings/cam pin

That is just not true if you like the idea of having money actually stay in your wallet from time to time.  This is the build it yourself forum.  Couple that with a moderate to severe case of Black Rifle Disease and things can/will get crazy.  I once built another complete rifle because the lower parts kit I had just used had an extra safety detent in it!  LOL!  Had that extra part so I just HAD to build another rifle around it.  Problem was that when I finished that new build, I STILL had an extra safety detent left over from the new LPK  You ever try to order a LPK without a safety detent?

In my experience, you must ensure, at all costs, that you don't end up with any extra/spare parts!

Edited to add something that actually pertains to the topic at hand.
Check out the AR barrels that Dan Lilja makes.  I'm shooting his 24 inch heavy on my precsion build and it is one of the most accurate rifles I have ever owned (bolt or semi-auto).  I know he makes a 16 inch.  Not sure about 18 inch.

I've narrowed it down to either the Nordic Components 18" 223 Wylde, or Criterion 18" HBAR 223 Wylde
