Hello all,
I am looking at building my first AR in the very near future and am looking for some recomendations on kits. I have ben leaning towads Del-ton as their prices seem to be the best and the quality is not disputed. I am really interested in a "tricked-out" carbine. I have also been looking at the mid-length barrel carbines.

1.What are the benefits or drawbacks to a mid-length barrel? It seems to me that accuracy may suffer a bit due to the placement of the gas block, but I may be off- base on that.

2. I keep hearing about M-4 feed ramps; I am not entirely sure what the benefits or drawbacks to those are.

3. Delton has a carbine and an M-4 kit. The barrles appear to be different; what are the benefits to a M-4 contoured barrel as opposed to a heavy barrel.

4. Chrome lined barrels;I always thought that was the way to go, but if that is true then why are non- lined barrels offered?

I have built a couple of FAL's and other small projects, but I have never built one of these so your suggestions are welcomed. Thanks in advance.

1. Accuracy will be affected by many things before the location of the gas block comes in to play. The midlength gas system will be softer shooting, by the way.

2. M4 feed ramps were added to the M4 (no surprise there) because of specific function issues with the 14.5" barrel in freezing temperatures. I have ARs with and without M4 feed ramps and they all function fine. M4 feed ramps also cause rounds to enter the chamber at an extreme angle and will scratch up the bullets themselves. This is not an issue unless you're going for extreme accuracy, but is something to consider.

3. M4 contour = lighter. Lighter = not as much of a pain in the ass. Midlength won't be an M4 contour.

4. Because non-chrome lined is cheaper.

If I were you, I'd buy the parts individually and build your own, rather than getting a kit. I built a few kit guns when I got back from Iraq and was pretty happy with them but am much more satisfied with the rifles I've built from individual parts.

Welcome to the forums and thanks for your service.
