Hello everyone. I'm starting to build an AR and I have never build one before. I need a little bit of help. I bought a DPMS 16" carbine length upper receiver from my roomate. It is a flat top upper with no forward assist or dust cover, has the factory heat shield hand guards and a railed gas block. My question is this: I ordered a set of MBUS sights, but it seems as if on the gas block the front sight sits too low. So my solution is to get a low pro gas block and a 10" free float quad rail. Does this sound like the best idea, or is there a better idea out there? Thanks in advance.

It all depends on your budget.  They make BUIS designed for railed gas blocks that are lower than your upper receiver.  But you are willing to spend the money go for it and get a low pro gas block and a rail of your liking.

While I would suggest you get a front sight made for a lower railed gas block, I can see why you would want to use the MBUS you already bought. You will most likely be happiest by changing out the gas block and getting a nice rail. You would most likely do that down the road anyhow yeah?

Personally, I would mount the front sight on the rail, not the gas block. And with a 16" barrel, you'll probably be happier with a 13" rail over the 10". Just depends on how much barrel you want sticking out.

Thanks for the help. Low profile gas block and a 13" free float rail sounds like the way I will go.

I'm pretty sure you aren't supposed to mount the mbuis on gas blocks due to possible melting because of heat

I used a MI SS series free float tube on one of my builds - not too expensive, good quality, mounts up solid and should clear a low-pro gas block nicely.
