Not strictly retro, but I wanted a mid length instead of carbine so this is what I've got so far:

C7 upper
BCM 14.5" CL 1:7 LW barrel
YHM phantom comp
PSA m16 BCG
BCM Mod 4 CH
Bushmaster lower
SSA-E trigger

I'm going to be swapping out the Cav Arms A1 stock, MIAD grip, and handguards for a CAR stock, A1 grip and shortened A1 handguard as funds allow.

John Thomas mounted the gas block and assembled the upper for me for a very reasonable price and does very fast work.  I got an email from JT the day he received my parts saying they had come in the mail, he had done all of the work, and he had sent it back that afternoon!

When I received it back, I noticed that the FSB was canted (or so I thought).  I sent John an email and he replied assuring me that the jig he uses to mount the FSB perfectly aligns it with the barrel index pin, but he offered to take it back, find out what was wrong and fix it for free. Upon further inspection I noticed that it was my upper receiver index slot that was out of spec.  I took the barrel off, filed a bit out of the slot and shimmed the pin over using small strips of a soda can.

John is a real stand up guy as many of you know, and for those of you who are newer to the forum, I highly recommend him for any work you need done. He can be contacted through his website retroarmsworks.com

Thanks again John for all of the help, I know you are a member here, but don't know your user name.

I like the looks of that a lot.

Doesn't look half bad for a Massachusetts neutered rifle. And I would agree the MIAD grip seems a little strange on that build. Did this John Thomas also pin you muzzle brake?

What hand guard are those?

Repeat after me - I dont need a mid-length, I dont need a mid-length.

Is it working?  I didn't think so!

Nice looking build!

I live in Berlin in central MA, right between marlboro and clinton, 20 minutes away from worcester, where were you located?

No JT didn't pin the brake for me, I drilled it before the install and had a buddy TIG it for me when I got it back.  JT does offer pinning services I do believe though

Thanks for all the positive remarks guys, I wasn't real sure if I was going to like the looks of the middy, but its really growing on me, and it shoots like a dream.
Can't wait to get a CAR stock and pin it so I have a little bit shorter LOP and get rid of the MIAD grip

Kinda looks like this (note position of the bayonet lug and is this the first mid-length?):

Just today I started tossing the idea around for a "middy" 177 ish clone.

Nice rifle OP!

I highly recommend the middys. Coolest looking and best handling  AR I own.

Great job on the build and OP used fixed stock along with muzzle-brake & removed bayo-lug to comply with MA laws

the only thing thats really neutered on it is the fact that i needed a fixed stock.

since its a 14.5 i would need to pin a muzzle device anyway, and since its a middy, there isnt much use for a bayonet lug on it with the 14.5" barrel, so I didn't feel bad grinding that off.  Now i just wish i could use a fully functional CAR stock instead of pinning it

When was that CAR-15 prototype made? I really like the looks of that (and OPs too!). I have an NDS-16A1 lower on order, perhaps my new build has found some direction.

I believe it's from the mid to late 1960s.  I think it's a mid-length but not the same as the current mid-length gas system.  The bayonet lug is actually where the sling swivel would be.  YMMV

Thats nice.

Like someone said here awhile ago...
Thats what the A2 configuration should have been.
